InformationYOUR FORESTRY CONSULTANT The forestry consultant is a business consultant specializing in the field of timber. He must show the client how to develop a more efficient, rewarding forest enterprise and show that forestry can be profitable business if sound forest management principals are used. Most owners of woodland in the south have less than 300 acres of timberland and earn their living from farming, profession or other job. Few have has enough forestry experience to manage their timberland successfully and with so few acres, hiring a full timber forester may not be economically feasible. There is professional help within reach of all forest landowners. As a Forestry Consultant, I am in a position to serve you on an “as needed” basis. When you harvest timber, I can work for you and help get the best price for your timber. Timber sales are an important part of the forest management program, but not the only part. Southern forests are growing about half as fast as they could under proper forest management. Weeding, thinning cull removal and tree planting are a few practices, which improve the growth of woodlands. I offer experienced guidance in planning this work or can supervise the work as it is done. There are many more ways timber growth can be improved, but space and time do not permit their complete discussion here. The best way to find out what your woodlands need is to make an on the ground inspection, then analyze them fully. Please feel free to call on me with any questions.

NewsForestry Consultant, Colin Bagwell, is Now an American Tree Farm System® Group Certification Auditor
Washington, D.C. — Colin Bagwell, Forestry Consultant in Huntsville, Ala., is now an American Tree Farm System (ATFS) Group Certification Auditor. ATFS, a program of the American Forest Foundation, is the oldest and largest voluntary, third party verification process in the United States. Since 1941, ATFS has been certifying the practice of sustainable forestry.
Mr. Bagwell has more than 34 years of experience assisting private forest landowners with management planning, timber appraisals and sales, and harvest supervision. He is a member of the Association of Consulting Foresters, Society of American Foresters, and the Alabama Forest Owners Association. In addition, he is an SAF Certified Forester.
Newly developed by ATFS, Group Certification is a third party auditing process for evaluating groups of landowners and certifying their well managed forests under a single certificate held by the group organization. Though a new procedure for ATFS, Group Certification itself is not new. It has been practiced in the Nordic Countries and other parts of Europe for over 25 years and is an internationally accepted practice.
This year, ATFS added Group Certification Auditor Training, a national standardized training curriculum for its inspecting auditors with established minimum education and experience requirements for certifying foresters, forestry consultants, and forest technicians.
An ATFS Group Certification Auditor is the third-party who determines if the group organization of landowners is operating in conformance with ATFS group certification criterion and whether group members are managing their forestlands in conformance with AFF’s Standards of Sustainability for Forest Certification (AFF Standards). AFF Standards require participants to have forest management plans, reforest their lands after harvest, comply with state Best Management Practices (BMP’s), protect special places, enhance wildlife habitat, use approved forest contractors, and otherwise be good managers of their forests. Upon successful completion of the review, forest owners are grouped under a single certificate, which is awarded to the group organization.

The American Tree Farm System (ATFS) is a national program that promotes the sustainable management of forests through education and outreach to private forest landowners. Founded in 1941, ATFS has 33 million acres of privately owned forestland and 51,000 family forest owners who are committed to excellence in forest stewardship. Tree Farmers manage their forestlands for wood, water, wildlife, and recreation with assistance from 4,000 volunteer foresters. ATFS is a program of the American Forest Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works for healthy forests, quality environmental education, and informed decision-making about our communities and our world.
