INTRODUCTION

Hey, I have a challenge for you.  Are you ready?  Let’s see how quiet we can be for 30 seconds.  Ready?  Go!  (Time 30 seconds on the clock or a watch.)  Time’s up!  Didn’t that seem to take forever?  Sometimes it’s hard to stay quiet.  In fact, most of us don’t have more than a minute or two that’s quiet the entire day.  Unless we’re taking a test at school or our parents give us a time out, we’re always talking to someone or listening to the radio or watching TV.

But, spending time by yourself in quiet is something that everyone needs to do every day.  In fact, one of the best ways to grow more like Jesus is to spend quiet time with Him.  You know, even Jesus needed to spend time alone with God.  The Bible says that He would often wake up early and find a quiet place to pray.

Once you get alone with God in a quiet place, what do you do?  Well, today’s drama answers that question.

KRISTA is sitting on her bed, reading her Bible and writing in a notebook.  On a table near the bed is a set of markers and a CD player.  ERIC enters, wearing a baseball glove.

ERIC:                Hey, Krista, will you play catch with me?

KRISTA:            (not looking up)  Maybe later, Eric.  I’m busy.

ERIC:                You don’t look busy.

KRISTA:            (still not looking up)  Well, I am.

ERIC:                School’s over.  You don’t have to study any more.  It’s summer.

KRISTA:            (not looking up)  I’m not studying, Eric.

ERIC:                Then, what are you doing?

KRISTA:            (still not looking up)  I’m trying to spend time with Jesus….alone!

ERIC:                Why?

KRISTA:            (putting down her pen, and finally looking up)  Well, one of the best ways to become more like Jesus is to spend time with Him.  So, I like to set aside a couple of minutes every morning to read my Bible and pray.  I like to do it alone so I can listen to what God wants to say to me.

ERIC:                Oh.  Okay.

KRISTA goes back to writing in her notebook.  ERIC watches for a moment.

KRISTA:            (noticing he hasn’t left, but not looking up)  See ya, Eric.

ERIC:                See ya.

ERIC exits, then after a pause re-enters.

ERIC:                Krista?

KRISTA:            (not looking up)  What is it now, Eric?

ERIC:                Can I borrow your markers?

KRISTA:            (still not looking up)  No.

ERIC:                (whining)  Why not!  You’re not using them.

KRISTA:            (still not looking up)  I might need them later.

ERIC:                Why would you need markers?  You’re just spending time with Jesus.

KRISTA:            (putting down pen, looking up)  Sometimes, during my quiet time, I like to draw pictures of the stories I read in the Bible.  It helps me imagine what it was like back in Bible times.  Other times, when I’m talking to God and I’m not sure what to say, I draw pictures of what I’m thinking and feeling.

ERIC:                Oh.  Okay.

KRISTA goes back to writing in her notebook.  ERIC watches for a moment

KRISTA:            (noticing that he hasn’t left, but not looking up)  See ya, Eric.

ERIC:                See ya.

ERIC exits, then after a pause re-enters.

ERIC:                Krista?

KRISTA:            (not looking up)  Yes, Eric?

ERIC:                Can I borrow your CD player?

KRISTA:            (still not looking up)  No.

ERIC:                Why not?  You’re not using it!

KRISTA:            (still not looking up)  I might need it later.

ERIC:                Why would you need a CD player when you’re spending time with Jesus?

KRISTA:            (putting pen down, looking up)  Sometimes, during my quiet time, I put on one of my favorite CDs and sing songs to Jesus.  (a bit embarrassed)  Sometimes, I even dance!

ERIC:                Oh.

ERIC:                Can I spend time with Jesus, too?

KRISTA:            (looking up with a smile)  Sure!  (pauses, then hands him a notebook)  Here’s an extra notebook for you.

ERIC:                Thanks!

KRISTA goes back to writing in her notebook.  ERIC watches for a moment.

ERIC:                Krista?

KRISTA:            (looking up)  Yes, Eric?

ERIC:                Can I use your markers?

KRISTA:            Sure!  (pause)  And, why don’t you turn on the CD player.  I feel a dance coming on!

CONCLUSION

There are lots of ways you can spend time alone with Jesus.  You pray while you’re taking a walk in the woods.  You can act out the stories in the Bible, with you a starring role.  You can sing and dance and draw and write!  Be creative.  When you spend time alone with Jesus, read your Bible, talk to Him about the important things in your life, and listen for what He wants to say back to you.  Once you start spending quiet time with Jesus, you’ll find it’s your favorite time of the day!
