THE BEARDED COLLIE, © by Chris Walkowicz

A Beardie is stubborn about new routines, tending to ride the tide with the familiar, balking at the new -- unless it’s he who is choosing another direction. Beardies are outgoing and loving, even when visitors are not interested. It is with difficulty that we keep puppies out of your face. If you can’t stand an occasional slurp or muddy paw int he midriff as you bend over, don’t buy one!

Like his country’s natives, a Beardie is hard-working. steady, confident, independent and friendly. He can also be headstrong in order to achieve his own way. A Beardie is always ready for a romp and inclusion in the family activities and does not thrive as a kennel dog unless the owner is extremely astute and allows time for interaction and exercise.

If a Beardie becomes out-of-control, you will rarely see an owner yank or yell. Not just because we adore them, but because the Beardie either melts into a totally useless lump of abject misery, or becomes a stubborn, immovable beastie. The lithe ease of a Beardie moving freely, tirelessly, trotting with no strain, yet with movement broken by the “Beardie bounce” from the sheer joy of being alive -- brings goosebumps of pleasure to the viewer.

To wrap up the Beardie mystique, a Beardie is affectionate, energetic, intelligent, steady, forgiving, stubborn, greedy, winsome -- in short almost human.
