This is a personal look at the Upper Mississippi River Valley, one of the great river valleys of the world. There is a bias towards information on Iowa since the maintainer of this site is from Iowa. I recommend driving along the river roads, on both sides of the river, stopping and investigating the various parks, towns, and natural sites. The Mississippi River and its nearby environs are also excellent for bird-watching. In the spring, there are many bald eagles to be seen at the southern edge of the melting ice on the river. Later in April and May, there are many migrating birds, especially water-fowl. This process reverses itself in the fall, although more slowly.
