Darrell and Rebas Spitfire Page.

The Triumph Spitfire is a small, nimble, and inexpensive Sports Car. This car accounted for about half of the total post war Triumph sales in the USA. And, indeed, it lead Triumph sales almost three to one during its production run from 1962 to 1980.

While the Spitfire went through many "improvements" in its 18+ years of production, the basic shape and design stayed almost unchanged. When you've got a good thing I guess you stay with it.

The biggest changes were to the engine, which grew twice from the original 1962 displacement of 1147cc to 1296cc in 1967, and finally the "big" 1493cc in 1973.

There were also changes to the width of the rear end and suspension in a succesful attempt to improve the handleing by increasing the rear track.

Other than trim changes (chrome and interior) the basic shape of the cars remained consistant. In fact if you were to see a 1962 and a 1980 side by side you might think there were two or three years between them, but not 18. A 1962 body can be bolted onto a 1979 frame with only very minor modifications (mostly in the area of the Bonnet hinges), thats not to say it wouldn't be any work though. Just ironing out the hybrid electrical system could be a nightmare. As if it didn't have any problems before you started.

I digress. The purpose of this page isn't to speculate on flights of fancy, but instead to introduce people (who may be Triumph challanged) to the potentially addictive world of the "little" Triumphs. Yeah, like even the "big" TR-6 was a monster, right?

So the next couple of pages contain pictures of two complete cars and a project car. The project car is in pieces, come on back in three to six months though, it should be done by then. As most long time Triumph owners will tell you, if you haven't had a project Triumph you probably haven't had a Triumph long.
