Redwood Pioneer Dies
Robert Steele, Early Settler at Delhi, Victim of Apoplexy Last Tuesday Night
Relatives and friends of Robert Steele were greatly shocked by his death last week. He was about as usual Tuesday afternoon, but was stricken with apoplexy in the evening and died very suddenly. The funeral services were conducted from the residence Saturday afternoon. The Rev. Mr. Myers of the Presbyterian Church read the burial service. Interment was made in the cemetery at Redwood Falls. All the children of Mr. Steele were present as well as a host of relatives and friends.
Robert E. Steele was born in Scotland in 1847. He came to Toronto, Ontario when he was four years of age, moving from there to Avon Bank, at the age of ten. There he married Miss Jane Wilson in 1873, and moved with his family to Redwood County in 1887. He had been a constant resident in this county from that time until his death. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Steele, eight of whom are still living. They are: Mrs. Nona Galvin of Redwood Falls, Mesdames Enge-man, Tramm and Bolton, all of Dehi, Thomas of Waseca, George of Chis-holm, Robert of Portland Oregon, and Wallace of Delhi. ---------------------------------
Robert married Priscilla Jane WILSON [532] [MRIN: 167], daughter of Unknown and Unknown, on 15 Oct 1872 in Avonbank, Downie Township, Perth County, Ontario. (Priscilla Jane WILSON [532] was born on 24 Mar 1851 in Nissorie, Canada, died on 2 May 1929 in Home Of Son Wallace and was buried on 5 May 1929 in Redwood Falls.)
Marriage Notes:
Hi, I just sent you the copy of the page from the bible. In case it's difficult to read I thought I'd better send the info. It reads: Marriage Certificate This Certifies that Robert Steele and Priscilla Jane Wilson were solemnly united by me in the Holy Bonds of Matrimony at Avonbank on the Fifteenth day of October in hte year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and seventy two conformably to the Ordinance of God and the Laws of the State. In the presence of Robert Francis and Nathaniel Wilson Signed: Rev. Robert Hamilton
Avonbank is a little town in Downie Township, Perth County, Ontario. One of the witnesses, Nathaniel was Priscilla's brother. I have a photo of him and Priscilla and her son's probably taken after Robert's death - perhaps right after as she is wearing black and the boys are all dressed up in suits. I'll send it.
