STONE HOUSE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
MISSION
STATEMENT
|
Our
mission is to restore the Stone House, the oldest building in Lake
County, California. It was built in 1854 and became a
California State Historical Monument in 1950.
Through the years this wonderful old house was allowed to fall
into
substantial disrepair until a group of senior ladies, who are
residents of
Hidden Valley Lake where the building is located, formed a
non-profit
Historical Society in 1990. The Society is dedicated to the
restoration,
maintenance and conservation of this historical site. Our firm
desire is to
keep it open to visitors — from the schools in the area, the
general population, members of other historical societies, those
interested in California history, Boy and Girl Scout troops and
other interested parties — as a significant contribution to the
living history of the area and the State as well.

Stone House
Historical Society actively seeks all available information about Stone
House and its environs. The recollections of long-time residents of Coyote Valley, and particularly those of anyone who might have once lived in or visited Stone House while it was in use, would be valuable additions to our archives and our
website.

Photographs would be especially appreciated; submitted items will be scanned and returned (along with a lightly restored copy if desired).

Material can be mailed to:
Stone House Historical Society,
18174 Hidden Valley Road, Suite 2,
Hidden Valley Lake, CA 95467

or emailed to: stonehouse@mchsi.com

In this
website we have attempted to compile information relevant to Stone
House, its surroundings and its history as presented by many
sources. The major sources are listed below.
It has been said that history is a matter of opinion, and that
seems validated by our research. The recollections of early county
residents are contradictory at times. Reports in newspapers, books
and periodicals likewise conflict, and often readily show the
writers' biases.

predominant sources:

Counties, California. Slocum, Bowen & Co. 1881.
