17 mai 1995, about 5:00 p.m. The Sainte-Chapelle and Palais de Justice Lost at first and ended up in the halls of justice, amidst lawyers in robes. Opened the door on a court case in the Premiere Chambre Civile (and quickly closed it); also walked along the Galerie Duc, Galerie des Prisonniers, Salle des Pas-Perdus. Asked a guard with a distinctly British accent how to find The Sainte-Chapelle. It is in the courtyard of the Palais de Justice. Also went through a tough security point with the
laptop and Martin saved me with his knowledge
"personal computer": ordinateur personnel. The floor is stone, I believe burial places, some carved, some inlaid with pearl white stone posts. The arched ceilings are painted blue and red. Blue has gold fleur de lis, red has gold palace icons with three lookout towers. The glass is very intricate. The red and blue paint is very worn, the stone is painted so where its worn you can see the gray stone underneath. Several circle pictures are bordered with large balls of colored glass. The light is beautiful, but the windows don't start until maybe 10 feet up the wall. A description of the royal chapel: The end with the stairs has a beautiful painting with a gold background, primarily in blue, red and green above very large wooden doors (that exit where?). There is also a small balcony above the doors, and above and behind that is a huge circle of stained glass in sections. Along the wall to about 12 feet, there are golden arches, again with the built-in seat all along the wall, painted with a dull green and red motif, each with a picture at the top of the arch. And then, the glass begins . . . Each section has four long panels, each panel has 10 ovals depicting various scenes. Every two panels ends in an arch, (so two arches to a window) and then there is a circle panel above that. The front of the chapel is painted in gold, again quite intricate construction with many arches and thin columns. The floor is stone with a mosaic of black, green, red, and blue down the center (like an aisle). There's a tour guide speaking French but I can't understand him. Also very simple gold chandeliers hanging from the ceiling on the sides only, hardly notice them because the gold blends in with the gold along the walls. There are lines where the glass was cut, but there are also painted black lines that outline details in a picture (for example, the lines of a hanging robe). The ceiling is green stamped with gold fleur de lis. Quite a large echo in here, also quite chilly. On either side, about 2/3 up the chamber, there is a small indentation, on the right side for the piano, and on the left, for the organ. Each indent has one small window, also. The piano side has a fleur de lis design. The pictures show many kings, in battle, on the
throne, with someone kneeling before them, eating,
standing, on a horse, with armored soldiers, and also
depict many scenes from the Bible. |
