What is an ophthalmoscope?
An ophthalmoscope is an instrument used by doctors to exam the eye.
Your child's doctor has the ability to detect retinoblastoma and other ocular (eye) disorders just by using the ophthalmoscope at every well baby exam. Make sure the room is dark! Turn out the lights! Then, an ophthalmoscope light is shined into your child's eyes for a few seconds and the doctor sees red or white. A red reflex is normal. A white reflex is seen when the patient has an ocular disorder. If this occurs, see an ophthalmologist immediately. Make an appointment for that day! Early detection is the only way to save the sight and lives of all children. Many children have to have their eyes removed, become blind or die because no one took a quick look in their eyes.
Please start with your child by demanding that your doctor use the ophthalmoscope in a darkened room at EVERY well baby exam. Do not take your child's eye sight for granted! Please see the Photos section for a picture of an ophthalmoscope.
Remind your child's doctor to
SHINE THAT LIGHT TO SAVE THEIR SIGHT!
