Russ on the left and Bill on the right. You will see Russ (and all others) firing up in the air, this is a safety practice. There are many things which can be accidentally dropped into a barrel, not to mention the powder itself, even a tissue or the paper case containing the gunpowder fired by a gun can cause injury. You will also notice that there is a rag around the barrel of Bill's weapon, this is often needed to keep the soldier from burning his hands on the hot barrel.
