Walsh High School (co-ed)
After the fire which destroyed the building housing Ottumwa Heights College and Ottumwa Heights Academy, plans were made for a new co-ed high school to be known as Walsh High School. The school opened in September 1960 in temporary quarters at the Ottumwa Airport, in former Naval Air Station buildings. Ground was broken for a new facility in 1961 at 2662 Meadowdale, and the first classes were held in September 1962. The entire student body posed for a picture (above) in 1965. In 1967, 1968, and 1969, the Walsh High School Gaels were state-recognized powers in basketball competition. In May 1970, Walsh High School held its last graduation ceremony. For the first time in 106 years, Ottumwa was without a parochial school below the junior college level. The building was sold to the Ottumwa Public School district, serving as Walsh Junior High School and later as the administrative offices for the school district.
