1925 The Sisters of the Humility of Mary establish St. Joseph Junior
College at the site of their motherhouse.
1926 St. Joseph Hospital moves to a site on North Ash Street, on the
estate of Dr. Benjamin W. Searle. Construction is underway on a new building
on Alta Vista Avenue.
1926 St. Mary’s Parish buys the Fourth Street building which housed St.
Joseph Hospital from the Sisters of the Humility of Mary for $40,000.
1926 The building housing Sacred Heart school at the corner of Fifth and
Court is razed and the land is sold to Lester Jay, who plans to build a
funeral home there.
1926 July. Fr. James Foley of Sacred Heart celebrates the 50th
anniversary of his ordination at Sacred Heart.
1926 Sept. 14th. St. Mary’s Parochial School is dedicated. It
is located in the Fourth Street building which formerly housed the Academy
of the Visitation, St. Joseph’s Academy and St. Joseph Hospital.
1929 St. Patrick’s parochial school is established.
1929 Sept. 22nd. The last Masses are said in the old St.
Mary’s Church (the second St. Mary of the Visitation) and the razing is
begun the next day.
1929 Oct. 21st. The first spade of earth for the new St. Mary
of the Visitation Church is moved. The building is to be built of Bedford
stone with a brick interior, in the style known as English perpendicular
Gothic. It will cost $250,000.
1930 (Early) The old St. Mary’s rectory is moved 100 feet east to provide
room to work on the back of the new church and to build a new rectory. The
move was done with mule power, assistant pastor Fr. Dennis Cahalan, was ill
with the flu, made the move in his bedroom, and said he didn’t feel any
motion.
1930 May 25th. The cornerstone of the third church of St. Mary
of the Visitation is dedicated by Bishop Rohlmann of Davenport, who also
awards diplomas to the first graduation class of St. Mary’s High School.
1930 July 1st. St. Joseph Junior College and Academy is
renamed Ottumwa Heights College and Ottumwa Heights Academy in order to
limit confusion with other institutions and to more closely identify with
the community.
1930 Sept. 29-30. The new St. Mary’s rectory is completed and opened for
public inspection. The Ottumwa Courier describes a feature unusual for the
time; the white enameled kitchen sink is 60 inches long, with a double
drainboard, and is equipped with "a new swinging spout-type faucet
combination."
1930 Oct. 19th. The first services are held in the basement of
the new St. Mary of the Visitation.
1930 Dec. 25th. The first Solemn High Mass is celebrated at 5
a.m. in the new St. Mary of the Visitation by Fr. J. M. Walsh. 45 vested
acolytes are in the processional march.
1931 May 10th. St. Mary of the Visitation, the third church of
that name, is officially dedicated.
1931 (About) With the completion of the new rectory, the former St.
Mary’s rectory is used as a convent for the Sisters of the Humility of Mary.
1934 Fr. Walsh is invested as a Monsignor of the Catholic Church at a
ceremony at St. Mary’s with Bishop H.P. Rohlmann of the Davenport Diocese in
charge.
1935 St. Mary’s High School now serves all three parishes and is known as
Catholic Central High School, teaching boys only.
1936 St. Joseph School of Nursing is formally affilated with Ottumwa
Heights College.
1948 March 17th. The Catholic Central High School basketball
team makes its first appearance at the state basketball tournament.
1948 April 25th. Sister Mary Grace dies. She served as
principal of Catholic Central High School from 1934 to 1940, and again from
1946 to 1948.
1949 July 28th. Msgr. J. M. Walsh announces his retirement
after 25 years as pastor of St. Mary’s. The announcement is made on his 80th
birthday.
