St. Joseph School of Nursing was organized by the Sisters of the Humility of Mary in 1914, soon after they opened St. Joseph Hospital in the former Academy building and Convent on Fourth Street (later Catholic Central High School). In 1926 the school moved along with the hospital to a site on North Ash Street, and then to the new hospital building on Alta Vista Avenue (pictured above). In 1936 St. Joseph School of Nursing was formally affiliated with Ottumwa Heights College. In 1969 a study was announced to consider merging St. Joseph Hospital with Ottumwa Hospital. In 1971 the last class graduated. In all, 702 nurses graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing. From 1952 to 1967 St. Joseph Hospital trained X-ray technicians.
