Catholic Central High School
The first Catholic school for boys in Ottumwa was St. Joseph Academy, begun in 1877 by the Sisters of the Humility of Mary. In 1882 a building was built to house the boys' school, which became known as Sacred Heart School. By 1886 more than100 boys are enrolled. In 1899 Sacred Heart (boys) and St. Joseph Academy (girls) are reorganized as co-ed, with the younger students attending classes in the Sacred Heart building and older ones in the Academy building. Later the schools are again separated by gender. In 1926, St. Mary's Parochial School is dedicated, housed in the Fourth Street building (pictured above) which was formerly St. Joseph's Academy. By 1935, St. Mary's High School is known as Catholic Central High School and serves all three parishes. In 1953 the last class graduates from Catholic Central High School, and the building is torn down to become the site of a parking lot. Students are moved to a building on Chester Avenue and the new school is known as Walsh High School.
