DNA Research Project
Join
To participate in the Rayburn DNA study, please go to the Raeburn Surname Project page, and complete a "Raeburn Project Join Request." You should then order the Y-DNA37 - - 37 marker paternal test (or the Y-DNA67 - - 67 marker paternal test).
Y-DNA37 - 37 Marker Test: tests the Y chromosome for genetic matches between males. A perfect match of 37 markers means that the two individuals matching shared a common ancestor in recent times. The customer receives
a Certificate & report generally describing Y-DNA sequencing and the meaning of probability
between matches.
Y-DNA67 - 67 Marker Test: tests the Y chromosome for genetic matches between males. A perfect match of 67 markers means a very tight connection: a common ancestor in very recent times. The customer receives a Certificate & report generally describing Y-DNA sequencing and the meaning of probability between matches.
FamilyTreeDNA actually offers a YDNA12 test. We do not recommend this test for our purposes. If you do choose to do a YDNA12 test, you can upgrade to a 37 Marker Test or a 67 Marker Test at a later time without doing a new mouth swab. A 12 Marker Test can prove you are NOT related to someone, but cannot prove you ARE related to someone.
After submitting your sample send a genealogy chart of your known male Rayburn ancestry to the project's administrator, Roger Rayborn, at raybornr@usa.net.
If you use the format on our Lineages page (http://home.mchsi.com/~r165/lineages.html as a guide, it would be helpful
Taking the Test
- The test kit is mailed to you at your home.
- Your genetic test kit consists of a cheek scraper and a collection tube. In about five minutes, you will be able to read the instructions and perform a painless cheek scraping. The effect of using the scraper is about the same as brushing your cheek with a soft bristle toothbrush. A backup scraper & tube is included to insure that a good sample is obtained by the lab. We intend that you use them both!
- The kit is then mailed to the lab.
FamilyTreeDNA will forward results to both the participant and the project administrator about 5 weeks after the laboratory's receipt of the individual sample.
How Much Does the DNA Test Cost?
- 12 marker test = $ 99+ shipping
- 25 marker test = $149+ shipping
- 37 marker test = $189+ shipping
- 67 marker test = $269+ shipping
FamilyTreeDNA offers other tests that are outside of the scope of this project. You are certainly welcome to order other tests including mtDNA.
