The Portals Projects and The Progressive Music Society.

OR

How a group of passionate music lovers moved 10 CD's around the world free to everyone!

In March of 2002, I started a Yahoo group called The Progressive Music Society. As the weeks and months passed, I saw the forum grow well beyond the fans. Every day it seemed, more and more musicians were joining the forum. As time went on, we discussed the possibilities  of a free CDR project spotlighting the artists of the forum. Initial response from the artists was such that "Portals, Movements & Structures Volume One" was a 2 CD set.  Vulgar Unicorn, Man In Space, Etherfysh, Lightspeed and many others can be found on the Portals maiden voyage. We distributed the set, along with custom artwork designed by my wife and printed by me throughout the group absolutely free and everyone loved it.

We set about the task of doing "Portals II" in 2003. This time the response was so overwhelming that the second project became a mammoth 4 CD set complete with custom, full color artwork designed by Steev Wiggs of South Jersey Prog Rock group, Donnamatrix, with typesetting and additional photos by my wife and me. An all star roster awaited those who received this one. Everyone from Guy Manning to Karda Estra to Pineapple Thief to Hidria Spacefolk ( who rocked NEARfest later the same year.) to Grammy nominee Patrick O'Hearn and so many others graced this project. In the end, the sheer size and diversity of this project proved disappointing for many members, or at least difficult to take in all at once.

"Portals III- Full Circle" came about in early 2004. Returning to a two CD set, it seemed a fitting end to a great set of projects.  Many new and emerging artists were found on this one, and one great lady who has been known in New Age circles for quite some time; Jan Hanford.  Among the artists on this chapter are: Frogg Cafe, Shades Of Dawn, US, Trigon, The John Young Band, Land Of Chocolate and so many more. All of the artists on the Portals projects have honored me with their participation. It was a privilege for me to assist in getting their music heard, and their CD's purchased.

Over the course of the 3 projects, over 3000 people in 21 countries are enjoying the music they would have otherwise never heard had it not been for a great group of people over at the Progressive Music Society.
