Patchwork
by Velma Thompson Looking back over the nearly 90 years of her life, Velma Fulton Thompson reflects on events from big to small which shaped her -- from the too-early death of her father to how much she'd have given for a tin plate for the small son who liked to throw his dishes off the high chair tray. The incidents of her life form a patchwork of light and dark, of humor and sadness, much like the quilts which she made for friends and family.
Velma Fulton was born in Audubon County, Iowa, in 1920. Raised on a farm, she married Virgil Thompson in 1940 and the two farmed in Audubon and Guthrie Counties for more than 30 years.
