The medical bills from the hospitals, doctors, and ambulance service ended being over $52,000. This was for the twelve hours spent trying to save Kurt's life. We knew that it was going to be expensive and we had no regrets in asking the doctor's to do what they could to save Kurt. We knew that there would be the liability insurance to help pay for the bills. However, the liabiltiy insurance would not be enough either. I have always thought that everyone had at least $100,000 worth of coverage in liability insurance. But in Minnesota the minimun required for auto liability insurance is $30,000!!! Anyone in their right mind would and should realize that $30,000 coverage for liability is nowhere near enough to cover medical bills for an accident or to fairly compensate someone for their loss. We also had to sue the insurance company to collect the $30,000 which meant we had to hire a lawyer for a fee. That fee was 1/3 of the amount collected. Why do you need to sue to collect what is rightfully yours? So the lawyers can get their amount.
I sent a letter to then Governor's Carlson's office requesting that this be changed. It would be too late to help us but would help others in the future. The response was that the minimum for liability was set at $30,000 so the average Minnesotan could afford the insurance. My argument is the average Minnesotan cannot afford the medical bills from an accident. I have sent a letter to Governor Ventura's office requesting the change again. Hopefully, it will happen.
News flash!!!!! The insurance industry is lobbying to have the minimum liability insurance changed to $0. They feel that the average Minnesotan would have lower insurance premiums. However, in order to collect from someone in the case of an accident the victim would have to sue the responsible individual. The average Minnesotan does not have $50,000 or $100,000 sitting in the bank to use as a settlement for an accident. Not only that, but in order to collect you would have to pay a lawyer a large sum of money to collect. This action by the insurance industry is wrong and we must fight it. We pay premiums for a reason. The insurance companies are just trying to save money and force the victim(s) to spend the time to collect. This is wrong.
