my little quaker

One green mean biting machine

This is a Quaker Parrot or parakeet. They are also known as Monk Parrots or parakeets. She is about 12 inches from beak to tail. And what a beak. One moment she will be kissing you, the next taking a hunk out of some part of your anatomy. She is also carnivorous. Chicken and tuna are her favorites but she loves great American junk food too, hamburgers and fries. She does eat seeds.

I originally bought her for my Mama. I have her now. She is un-believably smart. I was reading an article in Birdtalk and they have discovered that Quaker's are almost as smart as Grey's.

She loved my Mama and Daddy fiercely. The night my Mama died, I came home and told her, by the next morning she had picked almost all of her feathers out.
There are so many things she understands, she laughs, she can be really evil at times and sooo sweet at others. She can sing songs, talk and she is very sensitive.

Can you believe that these beautiful Quaker Parakeet's or Parrots are actually illegal to own in some states? I can think of one fast because it is a neighboring state, Tennessee. In some of these states they actually euthanasize them!

I used to belong to QPS(Quaker Parrot Society). I quit because they refused to stop selling on Ebay. Ebay sells "Canned Hunts." At least at that time they did, I presume they still do. I can't belong to any organization that in any way sponsors or condones such acts. If you don't know what canned hunts are, go to my Animals Site - Causes listed on the main Critter's page.

UPDATE: March 6, 2005-I am having a problem with space or rather the lack of it. Otherwise I would have a lot more pictures and graphics here. As for my little Quaker, she still has a plucking problem. I once took her to the vet for this and the medication he gave her almost killed her! We only have one in this area. I ended up strapping a pouch around my neck and carrying her with me all week-end, trying to keep her from dying. She especially loves coming out in the evening for our family meal, anxiously awaiting her special meal. She loves to eat regular people food, especially southern down-home cooking. They all compete for attention, it really isn't fair. If I knew then what I know now, I would have stopped...at her, I think.

UPDATE: April 24, 2005-When I saw the little crayon gif above, I knew I had to put it on this page. Daddy used to call Millie a 'mean green biting machine,' affectionately of course.

Bird lover!
