Bulldogs finish 4th in IESA State Finals. MSJH capped off the year by winning a State wrestling trophy for the second year in a row. Zach Chapman and Kyle Lindsey won individual State Championships in the 105 and 126 lbs. weight classes. Both Zach and Kyle faced opponents who had beaten them before, and came out on top. James Scherer (119) was State Runner-Up for the second year in a row after taking his final match into overtime. Shane Romine (65), Patrick Brewer (80), and Steven Fetzer (100) won individual medals as well. Lyle Shallenberger (75) and Spenser Keigley (126) gained valuable experience in their first State Meet. Lyle won his first match before dropping matches to the eventual state champion and 4th place finisher.

Eight MSJH Wrestlers Advance to State.  The Bulldogs took second place at the Sectional Tournament held at Stanford Olympia behind a very tough Bloomington squad.  Eight Bulldogs advanced to the IESA State Finals in DeKalb, including Sectional Champs Shane Romine (65), James Scherer (119), and Kyle Lindsey (126).  Shane won his finals handily, while James provided the suspense by taking his match into double overtime before escaping with a Gramby roll.  Kyle won his final with a 5-0 decision, avenging his only loss of the season.  Second place honors were won by Lyle Shallenberger (75), Steven Fetzer (100), Zach Chapman (105), and Spenser Keigley. Patrick Brewer (85) won third place, while Nick O'Dea took fourth place.

Bulldogs Win Regional Tournament.  The Bulldogs hosted the Regional Tournament on Saturday, March 23, 2002.  MSJH posted seven individual champions and ten other placers and came away with the Team trophy by the slimmest of margins-- 0.5 team point.  Sectional Champs from Mahomet were Shane Romine (65), Patrick Brewer (85), Steven Fetzer (100), Zach Chapman (105), James Scherer (119), Kyle Lindsey (126), and Spenser Keigley (167).  Clay Mitchem (65) and Lyle Shallenberger (75) were regional runners-up, while Nick O'Dea (75), Jake Myers (112), Nick Coile (135), and Jason Seaman (145) took third place.  These 13 Bulldogs advance to the Sectional Tournament at Stanford Olympia.  Four Bulldogs finished in fourth place: Luke Day (80), Dustin Campbell (135), Jack Tennant (185), Jeremy Ochs (185). Meets with Parkside, Herscher, and Kanakakee.  Mahomet-Seymour finished its regular dual meet season with wins over Normal Parkside, Herscher, and Kankakee to bring their record to 14-1.  The Bulldogs scored seven pins, three major decisions, and a forfeit against Parkside to win the meet 60-32.  On the following day the Bulldogs swept a triangular meet with Herscher and Kankakee.  Final scores were Mahonet-Seymour 81, Herscher 19 and Mahonet-Seymour 87, Kankakee 12.  The Bulldogs took a total of 13 forfeits in the tri meet.

Clinton King of the Hill, East Peoria Dual.  The Bulldogs showed up for the Clinton King of the Hill tounament in a big way.  In this tournament teams is set up with two pools of four teams each. Teams in each pool wrestle dual meets against one another in a quad format.  The individual results are compared in each weight class and the top wrestlers from the pools square off in the finals.   MSJH's pool included Clinton, Morris Shabbona, and East Peoria.  The Bulldogs swept their three team duals and advanced six wrestler to the finals: Clay Mitchem (65), Lyle Shallenberger (75), Patrick Brewer (85), Steven Fetzer (100), James Scherer (119), and Kyle Lindsey (126).  Shallenberger, Scherer, and Lindsey ended up as King of the Hill for their weight class.  Overall, the Bulldogs finished second behind Coal City.  Three days later M-S travelled to East Peoria Central for a dual meet.  The Bulldogs won the meet 56-40, the exact same score as during the meet at Clinton.  Winners there were James Scherer, Kyle Lindsey, Nick Coile, Travis Wright, Jack Tennant, Clay Mitchem, Lyle Shallenberger, Patrick Brewer, Troy Pittman, and Steven Fetzer.

Mahomet Hosts Tournament and Meet vs. LeRoy.  The Mahomet-Seymour Invitational Tournament was held on Saturday, February 2.  The Bulldogs had ten individual placewinners and ended up fourth in the team standings.  MSJH took a blow  when Tim Robberstad suffered a season-ending injury during his semifinal match.  Place winners for the Bulldogs included champions Patrick Brewer (85) and James Scherer (119), runner-up Zach Chapman (105), third place Kyle Lindsey (126) and Spenser Keigley (167), fourth place Tim Robberstad (90), fifth place Shane Romine (70), Lyle Shallenberger (75) and Steven Fetzer (100), and sixth place Clay Mitchem (65).  The Bulldogs followed up with a dual meet against Stanford Olympia on Tuesday, February 5.  The Bulldogs won the meet 78-16 adding seven wins on the mat to eight forfeits.  Nick Coile and Patrick Brewer won by fall, Zach Chapman earned a tech fall, and James Scherer, Kyle Lindsey, Travis Wright, and Shane Romine took decisions.

LeRoy and Monticello Dual Meets.  The wrestling team won a dual meet with the LeRoy Panthers on January 28 by the score of 68-27.  Pins by Tim Pruitt Steven Fetzer, and Zach Chapman, a tech-fall by James Scherer, and six forfeit boosted the Bulldog's score.  Kyle Lindsey provided the suspense for the night, taking Gavin Dunlop into overtime and winning 5-3 on a takedown at the edge of the mat.  The next night the Bulldogs travelled to Monticello for another meet.  Kyle Lindsey and Spenser Keigley led the scoring with a technical fall each.

Bulldogs Win Orion Tournament. The MSJH Bulldogs took first in a field if 15 teams in the Orion Invitational Tournament.  Leading the way with individual championships were Patrick Brewer, Steven Fetzer, James Scherer, and Kyle Lindsey.  Zach Chapman and Jack Tennant won second place finishes.  Shane Romine, Lyle Shallenberger, and Tim Robberstad finished second, while Tim Pruitt took fourth.  Steven Fetzer won special honors for the most falls with four pins in a total time of 1:41.  (At right: Kyle Lindsey pins his opponent in the 126 lbs. championship match.)

MSJH travels to Clinton.  The Bulldogs won a dual meet in Clinton on Tuesday, January 22, by a score of 55-42.  The score was high because fourteen of the eighteen weight classes had six-point scores.  Bulldogs winning by pin included Spenser Keigley, Lyle Shallenberger, Tim Pruitt, and Kyle Lindsey.  Decisions were won by Steven Fetzer, Zach Chapman (a major decision), Matt Dallas, and James Scherer.  The Bulldogs will see the Clinton squad again at the MSJH Invitational and in the state series.

Dual at Home vs. Monticello.  The Bulldogs hosted the Monticello Litle Sages in a dual meet on Thursday, January 17.  MSJH won the dual 74-18, winning 15 of the 18 matches.  Nick Coile and Travis Wright won back-to-back matches by first-period pins, while Spenser Keigley and Tim Robberstad pinned their opponents in the second period.  Kyle Lindsey and Zach Chapman also scored technical falls in their matches.  In addition to the junior high meet, Monticello and Mahomet-Seymour had meets on the high school and kids' club levels, too.  It was an enjoyable and successful night for the Mahomet wrestling community.

Dual Meet in Bloomington.  The Bulldogs suffered their first dual meet loss at Bloomington on Monday, January 14.  The junior varisty wrestlers looked very strong during their portion of the progeram.  The seven varsity wrestlers won matches during the meet: Zach Chapman, Spenser Keigley, Kyle Lindsey, James Scherer, Lyle Shallenberger, and Jack Tennant.

Coal City Invitational.  The Bulldogs had 13 place winners at the Coal City Invitational Tournament on Saturday, January 12.  Kyle Lindsey (126) and James Scherer (119) won championships, while Patrick Brewer (85), Zach Chapman (105), Nick Coile (135), Tim Robberstad (95), and Lyle Shallenberger (75) finished as runners-up.  Jack Tennant (185) won third place and Luke Day (80), Steven Fetzer (100), Tim Pruitt (90), Shane Romine (70), and Travis Wright (155) took fourth place.

Tri-Dual Meet in Normal.  On Monday, January 7, the Bulldogs began their dual meet season in Normal with victories over Chiddix and Parkside.  Mahomet-Seymour faced the Chiddix Chargers in the first dual, which started with the 105 lbs. match.  After wins by Josh Fitzsimmons, Zach Chapman, Kyle Lindsey, Shane Romine, Lyle Shallenberger, Patrick Brewer and Tim Robberstad, the score was tied 41-41 with only the 100 lbs. match to go.  Steven Fetzer stepped up and won a major decision to win the meet 45-41.  In the meet against Parkside, Mahomet won 64-39, with wins by James Scherer, Kyle Lindsey, Spenser Keigley, Jack Tennant, Clay Mitchem, Shane Romine, Lyle Shallenberger, Patrick Brewer, Tim Pruitt, Tim Robberstad, and Steven Fetzer.

Reed-Custer Tournament.  Just days before, on Saturday, January 5, the Bulldogs began their season at the Reed-Custer Invitational Tournament in Braidwood.  Overall the team finished 7th in a field of 16 teams.  Individually, 13 of the 17 Bulldogs placed in their weight classes.  Two Bulldogs took home invidual championships: James Scherer at 119 lbs. and Kyle Lindsey at 126 lbs.  Tim Robberstad finished second at 95 lbs. Three took home third place medals: Patrick Brewer at 80 lbs. and Steven Fetzer at 100.  Jack Tennant finished 4th at 185 lbs.  Sixth place honors went to Lyle Shallenberger at 70 lbs and Spenser Keigley at 167 lbs. Clay Mitchem and Shane Romine took seventh place at 65 and 70 lbs., respectively.  Three Bulldogs earned 8th place honors: Luke Day at 80 lbs., Nick Coile at 135 lbs., and Travis Wright at 145 lbs.
