Here is the Lap Description for Seattle Circuit:

Cross the start line at 129 mph. Stay to the left of the track to prepare for the right turn ahead. Keep it floored the entire wayŠ.you should be at the red-line of 6th gear at the end of the stretch. Downshift and break all the way down to 2nd gear, letting the rear of the car swing out a bit. Get back on the gas and slowly feed gas into the carŠŠas soon as you are able to shift into 3rd without sacrificing power from low rpm do so, and then floor it. The car should straighten out and as it does move to the right of the track and keep it floored, now entering 4th gear before the left turn. I did not hit the rumble strips on that last turn because I didnıt want to take the turn too far outsideŠ.I kept it tight.

You are now floored and are making that left turn to climb the hill. Cut the corner as close as possible to keep the car to the left of the track. Keep it floored and you should be able to hit 6th gear by the top of the hill. I didnıt let the car go into 6th though. When I did, after the jump I lost more speed than I should have, and since 5th and 6th are close together the way I have them set up you will not be gaining enough speed in 6th to make it worth shifting into it. The car will take the first jump in 5th gear, and by the second jump be ready to shift into 6th. Leave it in 5th, and that is going to help prepare for the right turn and also keep the car accelerating forward to its fullest potential after landing from the small jump. You would only be in 6th for a split second, and that is not worth it in my opinion.

Stay to the left and as you hit the top of the hill tap the breaks lightly and shift into 4th gear drifting a bit around the turn. You are trying to make the back end swing out when you downshift, and if done properly you should be able to floor it through the turn and not hit the wall on the left side of the track. Here is the first split, and you cross at 27.566.

First Split: 27.566

You are now floored and are heading down the small straight. Stay to the left of the track, and as you approach the right turn do the same thing hereŠŠslam it into 4th, drift around the turn, and floor it. You should be floored the entire time, and if you let the car drift properly you will not hit any walls even though you are floored. Keep it floored as you enter the S-turns and let the car enter 5th gear. The car is near the left of the track at this point because the line that was taken cut from the right to the left. Bring the car back out to the right a little because if you take the S-turn too far to the left the car will either hit the wall on the right or it will jump a bitŠ..cutting in from right to left will keep the car stabilized. I am not saying from the far right of the trackŠŠ.just a little bit out from where you normally would be if you normally would be hugging the left wall. Because its an S-curve the car will be closer to the right of the track as you prepare to take the left turn heading into the long straight.

Slam it into 3rd gear as you take the left turn. You went from 5th gear to 3rd, and try to get the car to cut as close to the rumble strips on the left as possible, even touching them to help turn the car and prevent it from hitting the wall on the right when exiting. Floor it down the straight and get the car to the left of the track to prepare for the turn where the railroad tracks are.

The car is redlined in 6th gear and hits 150 mph as its max speed. Slam the car into 4th gear and drift around the turn getting back on the gas immediately. Exactly at the half way point around the turn shift into third and then floor it in third. This along with the railroad tracks will help straighten out the car. Make sure that the car is straight when cutting the next turn or too much speed will be lost. The car is in 4th gear and floored and clipping the rumble strips is necessary. Hitting the wall on the right will ruin the run, but if you clip the rumble strips that will help the car keep to the left of the track when exitingŠŠat least enough to not hit the wall. The car should come very close to hitting the wall on the right and that is why you need those rumble strips to pull the car left. Here is the second split, and you are floored and crossing at 1:04.827.

Second Split: 1:04.827

Clip the rumble strip on the left and take the exit line straight clipping the rumble strip on the right on exit. The car should be floored in 5th gear before leaving this section. If it is not, then the previous section was not driven properly and too much speed was lost. Get to the left of the track and try to get the back end of the car to swing out for the right turn and shift into 4th and then 3rd to let the car drift. As you enter third floor it, and you will remain floored the entire way to the finish line. The car should be to the right of the track cutting the turn close if the back end swung out far enough. Taking the turn too deep will make it harder to straighten the car out to cut through that small gap before the finish line, and that section is important so you will be hitting the highest speed you can. Stay to the right of the track and straighten the car out to give it that left/right and floor it right through the gap. Keep to the left of the track and you should be hitting 6th gear as you cross the finish line. You cross at 127 mph in 6th gear at 1:22.855.

Final Time: 1:22.855

Split Breakdown:

1st Split: 27.566

2nd Split: 1:04.827

Final Time: 1:22.855

Nice Racing Everyone!

Competition 4 Challenge No. 2 (Terminal Velocity Racing)

Challenge Type: Fastest Lap (Free Run, Arcade Mode)
Track: Midfield II

Car:

In honor of the newest Bond film, we will be using the Aston Martin Vanquish--Preferably in solent silver!
Restrictions: No horsepower upgrades. Oil change okay; max allowable horsepower is 471. All other mods/tuning okay.

Target Lap: 1'13.500
Batavier's Target Lap: 4'32.000

Racing Deadline: 11:59pm board time, Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002

Comments: This track has long, sweeping turns more suitable to high-speed racecars with lots of aerodynamic downforce, but since we're running low on short, twisty tracks I gave it a go and found that it is actually quite fun with the Vanquish. Plus, it vaguely resembles the English countryside, so the Aston should be in its element here.

If anyone is missing this car, it can be had by winning the British GT Car Cup in Professional League. Alternatively, you can get one by earning all golds in the IA License exams.

Happy racing from your friends at TVR!

If there is one thing that is absolutely critical here, itıs the ride height setting: The front is set to maximum while the rear is scraping the ground. This has the effect of shifting the weight of the car to the rear wheels, which eliminates the understeer problem caused by having that huge V12 sitting right on the front wheels. Try this setting even if you donıt do anything else here—You should immediately notice a positive change in the response of the car.

On with the driving!

Cross the Start/Finish line at 140mph. Bear right.

Immediately after cresting the hill at the end of the straight, get on the brakes. You should top out at 153mph. Drift across the track to the left and aim for the rumble strip on the inside as you slow to no less than 120mph. Get back on the gas and power through the left-right that follows. (Try to do most of your steering on this section after youıve gone back to full throttle—The car will respond better.) Shave the left apex as close as you can without hitting the wall, and do likewise on the right as you cut over the grass and head into the tunnel.

As you come off the grassy patch youıre going to want to pull right as hard as you can, but odds are youıre going to hit that pesky left wall going through the tunnel. Thatıs fine, as long as the impact is light and at a fairly shallow angle. You should skip off the wall and slow to no less than 102mph. Continue to pull right, and hit the brakes hard the moment youıre back on the pavement. Slow to about 45mph going into that hard right at the end of the tunnel. Do your best to begin braking and turning very early here, as it will have a huge effect on your total time. Itıs okay to run over the rumble strip and even the grass on the inside right, but watch your throttle control on exit as the rear wheels will go right out from under you if youıre not careful. Feather the throttle as needed and get out of there.

Once youıve got control of the car and youıre regaining speed, attack the shallow left turn that follows by cutting over the patch of grass and skimming as close to the left wall as you can. Then aim for the rumble strip on the inside right of the next shallow turn. The idea here is to drive in as straight a line as possible, without making any radical steering corrections which will rob you of speed. Focus on building speed and gradually drift to the left on the short straight that follows.

T1: 23.355

You should drift so far to the left that you catch the left-side rumble strip for a few moments at the end of the straight. Then crank the wheel over and head for the inside apex of the sweeping right turn that follows. Youıll want to brake fairly late here in order to maintain a proper line through the turn—My braking point was at about 116mph. Slow to 74mph and crank the wheel to the right, then reapply the throttle. Itıs very important that you apply the throttle only after you have the wheel cranked over as this will affect the behavior of the car all the way through the turn. If possible, let the passenger-side wheels run over the rumble strip on the inside of the turn as this will actually tighten your turning radius and allow you to hold a better line. Just donıt get both wheels on the rumble strip (or the grass) at the same time.

Stick to the right as much as possible as you approach the second tunnel. You should have built back up to 100-102mph by now, at which point youıll need to dive into the left turn that follows. As you hit the apex of that first left turn, hit the brakes hard for about half a second and slow to 76mph, then immediately reapply full throttle. Take the second left turn before the back straight at full throttle and build as much speed as you can.

T2: 42.651

The next two turns can be trickier than they look. They seem harmless enough—a shallow right-left at the end of the back straight—but at these speeds it is easy to lose control of the car if youıre not careful and end up smacking the wall on exit (bad). Approach this by bearing left before the first turn. Turn in early and try to cut a straight line tangent to the apex of the first turn, getting a little farther over to the right than probably seems necessary. This will allow you to hold your line properly as you bring the car back around to the left. Again, try to hit the rumble strip on the left with your inside wheels as this will help you hold that line. As you clear the turn, try to begin building more speed as you approach the final left turn. Your exit speed should be in the 134-136mph range. Bear right.

From your position on the far right side of the track, dive into the apex of the final left turn. Aim farther to the left than you think you should, almost grazing the rumble strip on the inside. Your car should be pointed straight, almost as though you're going to go right through the turn and off the track into the sand. As you hit the apex, apply the brakes and slow from 142 down to about 80-82mph. Reapply the throttle immediately but lightly. The trick here is to maintain speed while avoiding over-application of the throttle (which will put you right into the wall before the final straight.) Crank the wheel to the left and catch the rumble strip on the inside left on the final segment of this turn. Build speed and graze the rumble strips on the right as you exit; by the time you clear the strips you should be back up to 100mph and climbing. Avoid making any radical turns down the straight and youıre home free.

Final Time: 1ı12.201

Winners Settings (ac29593)

Here are the settings for the ZZII:

They are my typical race car settings, except for the toe setting. My normal .5/-2.0 was not working well with this car, so I put the setting to 0/0 and found it drove much better. Eventually, I tested the setting a bit more and used some positive toe for front and rear. To my surprise, the car seemed to turn better and hold higher speeds going through the turns. The brake balance went from my normal 20/20 to 24/20 and the car seemed to respond a bit better as well.

Here is the race description for Apricot Hill Raceway:

Start by flooring it down the straight and keeping to the left of the track. The tires should not spin on the start, and you should pass the cars with ease. I hugged the rumble strip on the left when I made the left turn and drifted around the corner as I downshifted all the way into third gear going gear by gear to let the car brake. You should go from the rumble strip and then drift out a bit to the middle of the track because you want to get back on the rumble strip on the left side of the track heading up to the first split and have the car straight when you pass the split. The line you should be taking should go from left on entry of the turn then toward the middle of the track and then back to the left. The car is in third gear as you let it straighten out and then you floor it as you go by the first split.

First Split: 16.315

After the split you want to bring the car back to the left of the track to anticipate the turns ahead. These are the most important on the whole track and can make or break a fast run. Floor it through the split and then you should be in fourth as you approach the right turn. Get off the gas for a split second and tap the brakes so you can get the car to swing its rear to the left a bit. Clip the rumble strip on the right and drive over it so you can get the car back to the left of the track for the left turn. You should drive completely over to the left and keep it floored. The car should be in 5th gear and cutting over the grass on the left of the track. It is very important to be on the grass here, because you want to get the car straight so you can cut a hard right at the top and keep a line as you make the right turn. I got off the gas at the top of the incline for a split second to let the car swing out again, then I cut the wheel hard to the right and floored it. It was a quick right and then left, diving for the left side of the track and almost hitting the wall on the left as I exited the turn. The car was on the grass on the left side of the track and floored, still in 5th gear and at a speed that was at 140mph and climbing. Let the car cut back to the right a bit to get it back on the road. The second split is just ahead, and you want to get that car diving back left again so you can hug the turn and reduce the distance you drive around the turn. There are a lot of these quick left/rights in the beginning of the track, and the only way to get a good time is to take them aggressiveŠ.anticipating the turns and not worrying about messing them up. Here is the second split, as you pass it the car is cutting left to the rumble strip going around the sweeping turn.

Second Split: 27.528

As the car is going by the split, it is ready to make that hard left. Keep the car floored in 5th, and then as soon as you are going to make the turn slam it into 4th so the shift of the gears helps the car swing out and dive left. Get back on the gas immediately and you should have plenty of room to floor the car the entire way and not go onto the grass at the right of the track when you are exiting the turn. I was in 5th and floored when I was exiting the turn. Bring the car back to the left of the track and get prepared for the 180 degree right turn ahead. I was at 182mph in 6th gear before I slammed on the brakes for the turn. I downshifted to break the car and went all the way down to 3rd gear. I tried to let the car straighten out so I could floor as soon as it was straight and hit the highest possible speed I can going up the hill. This turn is better to take short and then floor the car when it is straight rather than flying around the turn at a higher speed and having a slower exit speed. Try to get the right two tires clipping the rumble strip on the right of the 180 degree turn as you exit, and the car can come off straighter with more speed. On this first lap, I didnıt make it over far enough, but on the second lap I hit the turn perfectly. I was floored in 5th as I passed the final 3rd split and brought the car over to the right of the track to prepare for the left turn ahead.

3rd Split: 50.538

For this left turn I downshifted into 3rd gear and then drifted around the turn. I wanted to get the car back to the left of the track so I can floor it through the quick left/right up ahead. I went from the rumble strip on the left, to the rumble strip on the right that was part of the left/right turn. My two right tires were on the right rumble strip, I was in 5th gear floored, and then I kept the car straight as I left the rumble strip on the right and went right through the dirt on the left of the track. I dropped it into 4th as soon as the car lost some speed and I kept the car as straight as possible. I was very close to the wall on the left but didnıt touch it. I kept the car floored and the car went to the right of the turn, but did not go on the grass. Make a hard left and get the car over to the left and use the left rumble strips to help turn the car around the final left turn. I was floored, but got off the gas for a split second in 5th gear just to make sure I didnıt hit the wall on the right of the track when the car faded over upon exit of the left turn. Keep it floored and you should be crossing the finish line to start the second lap. The car is over to the right of the track and will cut back left to make the left turn at the end of the straight.

Lap one split: 1:09.977

The car is floored and to the right side of the track. I reached the end of 6th gear and topped the car out at 199mph before slamming on the brakes and taking the left turn as I did on the first lap. The remaining part of the race should follow the description I made for the first lap.

Here are the splits for lap 2, along with a few comments.

Split 1: 10.419 ( I have been 10.1 here at my best, even though the time I got for this lap was my fastest time).

Split 2: 21.613 (One of my faster splits. Anything under 22 is good for this split)

Split 3: 44.508

After this split I went through the left/right turn as I described in lap one, but this time I came off to the right a bit as I exited the turn and went on the grass just a bit. If this happens, you can cut the car left as in lap one but do not need to get off the gas to prevent the car from hitting the wall on the right when exiting the final turn. That is how I raced the last section of the lap.

The car is floored and is now crossing the finish line at the right of the track.

Final Lap: 1:03.912

Final Time for this race is 2:13.889

Split Breakdown:

1st: 16.315

2nd: 27.528

VCD Controller: 30%

The VCD I normally put at 10% to make it feel more like a FR car, but for some reason I found that the 30% settings was perfect for this car. It seemed like it had more grip, and actually turned better. I wasnıt using much drifting at all except for the final turn which had plenty of room, so I had no need to use the extreme setting to help the rear of the car swing out when I would normally want it to.

Here is the race description for Tokyo:

When you start the race, immediately get over to the left of the track and try not to hit any cars. You want to try to pass as many cars as you can, and the most you will be able to do is get in 3rd place before the right turn ahead. If you donıt get into 3rd that is fine, just make sure you cut left in-between cars to make sure you can ride the wall ahead. Here is the part that I did not like doingŠ.riding this wall. I was running 5:01ıs and then decided to give it a shot. Riding this wall takes off 1 second per lap, and was crucial in getting a faster time.

Take the wall around the bend and it is possible that you can come out in first place at this point, which is ideal. You should be floored and pass the AI car on the left. You are still floored and are heading to the first split up ahead. Get the car to the right side of the track as you go through the split because the next turn ahead is very important. You will never see the AI car again.

Split 1: 20.765

The car is to the right of the track and is in 5th gear. As soon as you get to the beginning of the rumble strips, downshift to 4th and cut left to squeeze through the gap. Putting it in 4th and tapping the brakes will slow the car down so you can get through the gap without losing much speed. Any walls that are hit will practically ruin the run. I used the rumble strips cutting from left to right to help the car turn. Swing the wheel all the way left, then right, and then left again until the car is straightening out for the long sweeping bend. I took those quick turns through the gap in 4th entirely, and was hitting 5th as soon as the car started to straighten out. At this point the car is at the left of the track, and should stay there to increase as much speed as possible by keeping the wheel straight. I found that this car would barely accelerate when the wheel was cranked even the slightest amount, so keeping it straight as long as possible is important.

As soon as the turn ahead approached and I saw the rumble strips on the right of the track, I cranked the wheel hard to the right and kept the car floored in 5th gear as long as I could. The car will take the turn as much as it can, and then hit the wall on the left and almost try to spin out. When the car hits the left wall, downshift to 4th to keep the gears where you want them and get the most acceleration you can. Let the back swing out a bit and then floor it immediatelyŠyou donıt want to hit any more walls on this bend or you will lost too much speed. You should be able to keep turning right and take the rest of the bend floored without any wall touches.

Near the end of this bend, the car is at the right of the track and is straight. You are in 5th gear and floored approaching the left turn ahead. There are two ways to take this turn ahead. You can either ride the wall, or cut the wheel hard left and use the rumble strips to make the turn. I actually used both methods and mixed it up between laps. The time difference was next to nothing, but I found that if you mess up on the wall ride then you are going to lose too much speed and get passed by a car that takes the rumble strips around the turn. If you take the turn properly and cut it too wide, then you are not going to get the exit line you need and will get blown away by a car riding the wall. I found that the wall ride was more consistent, and took that route in my final run.

Get that car as straight as possible as fast as possible when you come out of the turn. The key is to keep the wheel straight and let the car build as much speed as you can. The car should enter 6th gear and be floored as you get to that quick right/left up ahead. Use the rumble strip on the right to keep the car almost as straight as possibleŠyou should almost hit the wallŠ.that is how close you want to cut this car right. The car should be able to straighten back out and not hit the wall ahead, or barely graze it at worst, as you go through the second split. If you graze the wall, slam it into 5th to keep the car accelerating.

Second Split: 1:00.316

Here is the most critical part of the race in my opinion. This car can not drift around the turn ahead because it does not want to accelerate when turning and will lose too much speed as well as hitting the wall, or multiple walls, on exit. You want to get through these turns keeping the speed high and keeping the wheel straight if you can to keep that speed climbing. The braking point here is going to be extremely earlyŠmuch more that you might think. Just BEFORE the road opens up after the split, which is well before the turn, you have to slam on those brakes. Downshift the car into 4th to help it reduce speed. As soon as the wheel is able to be straight to cut the turn in a line from left to right, floor the car and let it go through. Do not get on the gas a second before that. The car will not want to turn at that high of a speed. Make sure it is straight, and then jump right back on the throttle. I used the rumble strips to help the car go through the turns. The car should have so much speed now that you should be able to shift into 5th coming out of the turns and heading down under the bridge to make the final turn of the track. Keep it floored the entire time and try not to hit any walls. You will hit the wall under the bridge near the end because the car can not make the turn, but that is fine. The right hand final turn is just ahead, and the car should be braking soon anyway.

I was in 5th gear still by the time I came out of the bridge area, and then I downshifted to drift around the turn. I took the car all the way down to second gear, and cut the turn tight. There was plenty of room to get that wheel straight for the exit. At this point the car should be floored and heading up the hill to cross the finish line for lap 2. Make sure the car is over to the left of the track to let the wheel stay straight and the acceleration can climb faster than if you are all over the road. The car should be at the left of the track because you want to set up the wall ride at the end of the long straight.

Lap 1 Split: 1:44.732

Lap two and three should be raced in the same way as lap one.

Here are a few comments and split times from the second and third laps:

The 1:44.732 was pretty fast for the first lap. My best split here was low 1:44ıs, but anything under 1:45 will be enough to get a great time.

Car maxed out at 170mph before the right turn ahead.

Split 1: 12.772

Split 2: 52.643

Lap 2: 1:36.964

The 1:36.9 was decent. Best split for any 1 lap was 1:36.5, but didnıt get that low in this run. My goal was to be able to string together a 1:44, and then 2 1:36ıs. It seemed to work out well.

Lap Three

Split 1: 12.664

Split 2: 52.813

My middle splits have been as low as 52.2, but anything in the 52ıs is good to keep.

Lap 3: 1:37.004

Final Time: 4:58.700

Here is the split breakdown for the entire race:

Lap 1: Split 1 => 20.765
Split 2 => 1:00.316
Lap 1 Time: 1:44.732

Lap 2: Split 1 => 12.772
Split 2 => 52.643
Lap 2 Time => 1:36.964

Lap 3: Split 1 => 12.664
Split 2 => 52.813
Lap 2 Time => 1:37.004

Final Time => 4:58.700

Sharkport Replay Here!

A few general driving tips...

Ride the wall through the very first turn--That sweeping left at the end of the straight. As the road bends to the right, try to maintain full throttle as you ease the car back onto the road. (Remember that you'll accelerate MUCH faster on the road than you will in the grass, even at high speed.) Gun it and hurl the car into the next turn, a sharp left, by riding the wall once again. Your speed should drop to about 40-50mph. Feather the throttle carefully as you pull through the right-hander that follows, then build up as much speed as you can and get ready to wall-ride again. Ride your way through the first tunnel, straighten out, and repeat one final time: Smash into the wall and ride through the second tunnel at 80-90mph, hitting the brakes as you exit.

That's four places where you'll need to ride the walls, all left-turns in the first half of the track. After that, it's all about early braking and careful driving.
