From Mark Pierce: 6 Nov 2002, I took a cancer patient out sailing one day not to long ago, and saw her again the other day at Casa Java. We got to talking about how great it would be to set something up for others in her conditions or similar conditions so that they may be able to sail. She is far too weak to sail on her own, the truth is she is too weak to walk around the block, but she had a blast sailing. She said it did a world of good for her. When talking to her I got pretty motivated to try to make it possible for others like her or even less fortunate to go out sailing. What can we do through the club or MWR to set something up? I know we can't schedule the wind, but what can we do?

Mirror Lake, 31 Dec 2002: The lake bed is still very wet (under water) in the SW section and everywhere North and East of the GPS tracks on this map. Please be careful not to sail or drive through wet areas. Hazard cones have been placed along some of the wet areas most convenient to landsailing.

Edwards AFB, 23 Nov 2002: The lake bed had just dried and was very smooth and "shiny" (photos below). The wind was light and from about 280. Top speeds were nearly 30 mph. See data below for some detail on speeds and headings.

GPS track data (using a Garmin Legend): This data shows the maximum speed for various headings on the 2 days of sailing described above in this section. Red data points are for Mirror Lake -- wind was moderate at about 240, and max. speed was almost 40 mph. Blue dots are for Edwards AFB -- wind was light at about 270.

El Mirage, 5 January 2003 (Back to the Top)

We got skunked by the wind on Saturday, but what a beautiful day. We had a great time wishing Joann Cunningham a happy birthday and celebrating with some sparkle.

Happy Birthday Joann!

Ranger Gina checked-up on us ... on a scooter? Gina, thank you to you and the other BLM Rangers for patrolling the area.

Edwards AFB Sailing, 23 November 2002 (Back to the Top)

Edwards MWR hosted a few of us from China Lake for their last outing of the season. 12 boats on Rogers Lake was something to see. The wind was light but enjoyed by all. We saw a piece of landsailing history -- Harvey's "Shoe" (a former America's Cup winner and land speed record holder); and we also got to wish COL Cherie Zadlo well as she prepares to leave for her next assignment. Fair winds, Cherie!

El Mirage Sailing, 26 October 2002 (Back to the Top)

A group of landsailors from China Lake, CA visited the Wind Wizards at El Mirage.

The wind was light, but perfect for Margot Hoover's first solo ride on her new (used) Manta single. She's the one with the pink sail and the BIG grin.

We had races through the pucker mounds, leasons for the new folks, and GREAT desserts at the end of the day. Thanks to all for a great time -- hope to see you again soon!

Water Rocketry (photos by Steve Brown): Going... going... gone... 300 feet on a half liter of water and 100 psi air. Greg's unconventional rocket flew great!
