Martis Peak, Tahoe National Forest

On a clear day you can see Mt. Lassen 114 miles away to the northwest, and Yosemite’s Matterhorn Peak, 90 miles away to the southeast.

 

Driving Directions to Martis Peak

  From the East

      Follow the Route of Historic U.S. 40 West from Atlantic City, New Jersey towards San Francisco, California ( about 3,000 miles ) to the Exit 188B ( Ca. State rt. 89, Ca. State rt. 267 to Lake Tahoe.  Turn South and drive 8 miles to just short of the Brockway summit ( El. 7200 ft. ).

      Turn left ( East ) through a gate on a narrow paved road, and drive 3.4 miles to the lookout. Drive slowly and watch for oncoming traffic on this narrow winding road. A gate ¼ mile from the lookout is unlocked from 9 AM to 6 PM during the summer fire season.  The lookout access is a paved, narrow winding road which can be driven carefully in a small 2WD vehicle. 

      Historic route U.S. 40 is now designated U.S. Interstate 80, which you can access across the United States. The Tahoe National Forest Big Bend Visitor Center has exhibits on the evolution of this route from the pioneer days, which you can look at online here:

From the West

      Head East from San Francisco on Interstate 80 about 190 miles to the Exit 188B ( Ca. State rt. 89 to Sierraville, Ca. State rt. 267 to Lake Tahoe.
