New slimmer design reduces
spring pressure and improves twist on/off operation in MiniMag 2AA
conversions. No more farkeled Luxeons from excessive spring pressure
during on/off twist operations.
All surface mount device construction allows for a stronger assembled package with consistent unit to unit performance. The Illuminator SMD brings state of the art solid state lighting to traditional popular 2AA flashlights with out breaking your budget. Get brighter, whiter light with the Illuminator SMD Luxeon LED and DC/DC converter in a self contained drop in module. There is no filament to break, so you won't be left in the dark by an unfortunate drop of the flashlight while using it. The Luxeon LED takes a knocking and just keeps on producing light like nothing happened. |

Shown side by side with a
popular incandescent 2AA flashlight, it's obvious you'll get whiter and
brighter light using the Illuminator SMD. And, unlike incandescent
flashlights, the light won't turn more yellow/orange as the batteries run
down. In fact, the Illuminator SMD will maintain the same white color tint
and nearly the same light output level over the life of the batteries (see
run time chart below).
End those frustrations with ordinary 2AA flashlights that barely provide enough light, or fail when you most need them because the flashlight was bumped or dropped. Get reliable long life operation from the Illuminator SMD and never be left in the dark again. Get lithium cell performance from alkaline and rechargeable NiMh batteries without the expense of lithium batteries. |

Different than old technology
incandescent flashlights, the LED light output won't gradually fade and
turn more yellow as the batteries run down.
The Illuminator SMD circuitry regulates the power to the Luxeon LED and achieves nearly constant light output over the life of the batteries. Optimized for use with NiMh/NiCd rechargeable AA cells, however regular alkaline AA cells can also be used, but with a small decrease in performance. The SMD circuitry also switches into a low level survival mode when the batteries are nearly depleted so you're never left suddenly in total darkness. Illuminator SMD provides state of the art solid state lighting in the most economical option available. Low cost, ease of installation and use will fulfill your portable lighting needs for years to come. |

A note about alkaline cells and run time
measurements:
The run time chart to the left shows the same 2 AA cells used in the first run time chart above, only after being allowed to rest for 24 hours. As you can see from this second chart, alkaline cells will recover some voltage after a rest period and provide more service. Flashlights are usually used intermittently for a few minutes at a time. When used intermittently, battery life for alkaline cells will be nearly double what is shown in the first run time chart. So, don't throw away those 'dead' batteries from continuous use, as they can provide more light if given a few hours to 'rest'. In fact, after the cells 'rest' their internal resistance is higher, and therefore actually last longer, but at a reduced output level. Also, normal intermittent use with alkaline cells will provide more constant light output than shown in these continuous use charts. |

Using the complete SMD Luxeon LED
Typical applications for modifying small 2AA flashlights require the assembled
converter to be used in place of the original bulb socket assembly in commonly
available flashlights such as the Brinkmann Legend or MagLite MiniMag.
MiniMag conversion instructions:

Installing the lens and o-ring:
Remove the flashlight head and unscrew the front bezel. Remove the reflector and drop in the lens and then place the o-ring on top of it. Install the bezel (leave in the front window) and tighten.

Disassembling the flashlight:
Remove the bulb and pry off the top of the bulb switch socket, and push the plastic assembly inside out the end of the battery tube. Drop the SMD in to the battery tube, Luxeon end first. Install 2 AA batteries and install the tail cap. The SMD should be lit up nice and bright. Screw on the head assembly and check for proper on/off operation. If light operates correctly, remove batteries and install the SMD retaining gasket by dropping into the battery tube and then inserting both batteries to seat the gasket. The SMD can be removed later by gently pushing the SMD out of the battery tube using a soda straw or pencil with eraser end on Luxeon lens. That's it, you're done. Enjoy your new light....... |
2AA flashlight SMD Mod
General notes about the modification:
This modification can be used in many 2AA cell aluminum flashlights. It has been
tested in Brinkmann Legend and MiniMag flashlights. Suitability for use in
other flashlights depends on the construction of the particular flashlight.
Under no circumstances should this modification be used in other than aluminum
or other metal flashlights because it relies on the heat transfer from the
converter to the metal flashlight body. Plastic flashlights are not
suitable for use with this modification.
The SMD uses the copper clad circuit card that makes up the top of the module circuit as a heatsink. While this is a minimal heatsink, not normally
recommended for use with Luxeon LEDs, in this particular modification the
thermal path from the Luxeon through the copper cladding to the flashlight
battery tube lip is so short that adequate cooling is maintained.
The twist on/off operation of the original MiniMag is preserved in this
modification by using the NX05 Luxeon lens to push back the SMD, opening it's
negative contact to the battery tube lip.
When turning on the light, ensure the head is turned
slightly past the point where light is first seen to make sure the converter heatsink
is firmly in contact with the battery tube lip for proper heat transfer and to
avoid flickering.
Use of lithium batteries in this modification is not recommended due to the
minimal heatsink design.
Not for use in AA cell flashlights with more than 2 AA cells.
