MICRO ILLUMINATOR - Brinkmann Legend 1AAA cell flashlight modified with 1W Luxeon High Dome LED and DC/DC regulator.

CPF ArcMania and Lambda have teamed up to produce the Micro Illuminator, which brings Luxeon brightness to a single AAA Flashlight. Featuring a super efficient MicroPill DC/DC voltage converter circuit driving a Luxeon LED, the Micro Illuminator can provide hours of bright illumination from a single AAA battery. Yes, that's right, up to 2 to 3 hours of bright, continuous light, followed by a survival mode that provides up to an additional 8 to 10 hours of useful low level light from just one AAA battery.

Technical Characteristics:
Size: 3 3/4 inches long
Weight: 25 grams (less than 1 ounce)
Battery: Single AAA cell
Bulb: MicroPill DC/DC power converter with Luxeon LED
Bulb Life: Estimated at 100,000 hours of operation
Run Time: 2 to 3 hours plus 8 to 10 hours of survival mode lighting

Micro Illuminator

Hosted in a modified Brinkmann 1 AAA Legend flashlight, it is small enough to fit comfortably into almost any pocket, or on a key ring (included). Small size, light weight, bright and reliable operation will make this an indispensable illumination tool for hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities where equipment must be carried. Pilots, policemen and others will find its small size, bright output, and long run time attractive as a source of illumination for cockpits, paper work, and other such activities that must performed after dark.
The Micro Illuminator uses the new EOS process Luxeon LED for bright, smooth light output that maintains it's color tint from the center of the beam to the edge of the corona. Unlike other AAA lights, you won't find yourself distracted by color variations in the output beam. The broad beam of light produced by the Micro Illuminator allows you to actually see what's around you without having to constantly point a small spot of light at items of interest like other flashlights force you to do.
Don't be fooled by it's small size, or long run time. Unlike most LED flashlights, the Micro Illuminator has real throw to it's powerful beam. A supper efficient DC/DC converter circuit and select grade Luxeon LED combine to produce amazing light from this tiny flashlight. This is one little flashlight that won't leave you in the dark.

Construction notes:

The original prototype construction was to have the power pill securely potted in to the flashlight with electrically conductive silver epoxy. The prototype pill's copper/solder to aluminum case electrical contact was not that stable, and could introduce some flicker at times. Therefore, the need to pot the pill in place with conductive epoxy. However, that would mean if the flashlight ever got scratched up or otherwise cosmetically damaged, you would be stuck with it in that condition.
For these "production" units, we elected to spend the extra money to gold plate the circuit cards so the pills would not have to be bonded in place. By accurately trimming and polishing the top of the battery tube, a stable gold to aluminum electrical connection is maintained without the use of conductive epoxy. This means that yes, you can remove the pill and place it another modified AAA Brinkmann flashlight should the original ever get cosmetically damaged. Or, even switch case colors, or use with a custom designed case, the possibilities are endless........

Now, knowing the habits of most our customers, it is an eventuality that you will have to disassemble the flashlight to see what's inside. So, while we certainly advise against such actions, (photos of what's inside are supplied above) we offer the following advise to make this process as easy as possible, and hopefully preclude you from damaging the pill in the process. So, pay attention to the advice below:

1) Never unscrew the front bezel with the battery installed. The battery spring will shoot the pill and battery out the front of the unit, possibly damaging the pill or reflector in the process. Always remove the battery before disassembly, and that's just good advise for any flashlight disassembly. Remove the battery and unscrew the front bezel, remove the front glass and reflector; don't loose the oring between the reflector and glass.

2) Do not apply force to the pill to remove it from the light; it should drop right out. However, the tolerances are tight, and it may not readily slide out. Try lightly tapping the flashlight on a hard surface to jar the pill out; notice I said "lightly".

3) Do not "play" with the pill, the Luxeon lens is soft and scratches easily, and you may contaminate the gold contacts with oil or dirt from your hands. The same goes for the top of the battery tube; don't touch it or you risk introducing contamination that may interfere with a good stable electrical contact.

Reassembly:

1) Drop the pill in to the top of the battery tube. Carefully screw the head on 3.5 revolutions, insuring the pill does not bind up against the inside head threads in the process.

2) Install the reflector in to the head, and carefully tighten the head to where the reflector just touches the body of the Luxeon LED, and back off one half turn.

3) Install the front bezel, oring between glass and reflector. Tighten the front bezel by holding the head only; you do not want the head to turn in relation to the battery tube.

4) Install the battery and tail cap switch; and turn the light on. Carefully tighten the head assembly using light pressure. Snug it up just enough to make good electrical contact. Do not over tighten, or you may crush the Luxeon LED.

It is essential that no contamination be introduced during disassembly/reassembly or it may result in poor electrical contact inside the flashlight. Again, we recommend against disassembly, and have supplied pictures above showing what's inside so you don't have to look for yourself.

Other "do nots" you should know about:

1) Do not try to operate the pill off of more than one 1.5V battery cell. There are some very low resistance, low voltage  semiconductor components used which can not tolerate anything over 2VDC. Trying to operate the pill from two cells will kill it instantly, and most likely also destroy the Luxeon at the same time.

2) Do not over tighten the head assembly. The head assembly only needs to be snugged up with light finger pressure to maintain a solid electrical contact. Over tightening the head can crush the Luxeon, and/or damage the gold contacts.

3) Do not leave a dead battery in your flashlight. Depleted batteries may leak electrolyte and damage the pill and flashlight beyond repair (doubtful that Eveready, Duracell, or any other battery manufactures will honor their "if it leaks, we'll fix or replace the item" warranties on a custom mod flashlight).

4) Do not stare in to the beam. This may result in eye damage, seeing spots, or ridicule from those around you.......
