In the subuded hour before dawn, Genjo Sanzo awoke. Yawning involuntarily,
he rolled onto his back and let his mind wander.
For Sanzo, an ascent from unconsciousness at such an early hour was nothing
new. As a young acolyte, he had never been allowed the luxury of lying in
bed all morning. As the default leader of the journey west, he had been the
one to force his companions awake at ungodly hours so they could make better
time. And now... now that it was all over, nothing had changed.
Except maybe everything.
How stupid. Sanzo scoffed at himself; absurd thoughts always came from sleeping
too long. Fortunately, such troubles could be remedied by leaving the bed.
He tossed aside the blankets and made to get up.
At least, that had been the plan. Instead, Sanzo was stopped in his tracks
as a set of wiry arms reached out from the other side of the bed. They locked
around him tightly, effectively halting his egress. With a surprised grunt
Sanzo fell back to the mattress; two legs joined the arms in wrapping around
his body, and he was trapped.
"What the hell?..." The monk struggled, but it was no use; his captor
seemed intent that he go nowhere. Fortunately, Sanzo was just as stubborn. With
some effort, the blonde managed to rotate until he was facing the opposite
direction. Upon completion of this action, a pair of golden eyes blinked a
sleepy greeting, and he blinked back in a momentary daze before returning
to himself and glaring instead.
"Just what do you think you're doing?" Sanzo hissed, still trying
to break free. "Let go."
The arms tightened their grip. "Come back under th' blankets," Goku
murmured blearily, trying to pull Sanzo closer. "You're letting in all
the cold air."
"If you'd let me go," the captive said pointedly, "You could
cover your lazy ass in the blankets and keep the cold air out." He struggled
some more. "What's gotten into you?"
"You're warmer'n the blankets," Goku answered, ignoring the question.
"Stop wiggling."
"That's my line, monkey." A vein in Sanzo's forehead was beginning
to twitch. This was NOT how he had planned to start the morning....
"Sanzooo...."
"Let me free and I'll stop." Sanzo tugged once more against those
ridiculously strong arms, which drew a pained sigh from the brunette. "C'mon,"
Goku whined. "You never ever sleep in."
"I wonder why," Sanzo deadpanned, rolling his eyes. "Let me
go."
"Not gonna," Goku declared childishly, pouting for effect.
"I am NOT falling for that," Sanzo grumbled sourly. "I mean
it. Let go." He gave a fierce push against Goku's chest, surprising the
young man into loosening his grip. It gave Sanzo enough leverage for an escape,
and he pushed away, using Goku's temporary shock to gain the upper hand.
It was a good idea; however, Goku was having none of it. As Sanzo pulled back,
he was attacked by a bizarre maneuver that effectively pinned him to the mattress
with Goku spread-eagled on top of him. Utterly exasperated, he swore fluently.
"Enough! I mean it!"
"So do I," Goku answered. He raised onto his elbows to lock gazes
with the older man before leaning down to kiss his forehead. "Stay, please?...."
It was useless to fight those eyes, and Sanzo knew it. A sigh of defeat escaped
him. "As if I have a choice," he grumbled, allowing Goku to pull
him back beneath the blankets. After pulling the sheets up and over them once
more, Goku sunk back to his place on Sanzo's chest. The little youkai exhaled
deeply, obviously satisfied with his triumph over the grumpy monk.
"Sankyuu," he whispered, burying his face in the man's warm
shoulder.
"Idiot." The word left his lips without any meaning attached, diffusing
harmlessly into the air as he lifted a pale hand to Goku's sleep-rumpled mane.
"Sanzo...."
"Just rest already."
A comfortable silence followed that found the two at a rare moment of peace.
Eventually, however, Sanzo's body began to miss the blood flow denied by Goku's
weight, and he pushed him toward the side of the bed for relief. At this gesture,
an insistent whimper broke the stillness, and Goku quickly laced his arms
around Sanzo's neck to keep him from leaving.
"Stop it," Sanzo huffed, trying to ignore the muffled cries. "I'm
losing circulation. Just move over." Mollified, Goku obeyed, rolling
onto his side and quickly wrapping himself around the monk's lean body once
they had moved into more comfortable positions. Silence filled the room once
more, save for two sets of steady, even breathing and the occasional rustle
of crisp white sheets.
"Thought you weren't gonna fall for it," Goku suddenly mumbled against
Sanzo's chest.
"I didn't."
"Ch. Liar."
He could feel Goku's smile curving against his skin. Smug bastard. "Shut
up and sleep."
"'Kay...." And Goku was lost to dreamland, a cross between a yawn
and a sigh escaping from him as he left the world behind. Alone with his own
thoughts, Sanzo dropped his eyes to the sleeping face, studying it as a warm
lethargy crept into his body. Finally he surrendered, welcoming the darkness.
When Goku awoke a few hours later, Sanzo was gone. He stared at the empty
spot for a moment before rolling into it. It was still warm.
Smiling, he fell asleep again.
