Celesta Darlene Young, 76, of Burlington, was granted her angel wings on Sunday evening, May 13, 2012.

She was born July 27, 1935, west of Burlington, the daughter of John Floyd and Clara Myrtle (Jasper) Stone.   She grew up on a farm on the Greenwood and Coffey County line west of Gridley, and attended Gravel Hill School, and Gridley Rural High School, graduating in the Class of 1953.  She then worked as a secretary in Topeka.

On April 17, 1954, she married Louis Merle Young at Gridley.   They first lived in the oilfields, and then moved to their long-time home on the highway west of Gridley. Darlene worked for many years at the Citizens State Bank in Gridley.   She and Louis moved to Burlington in 2002, after her retirement.

Darlene loved bowling, and was active in women’s league and traveling team, as well as in mixed league with Louis.   She also loved to play cards, in card clubs and later at the Burlington Senior Center, where she was a board member and vice-president.  She enjoyed all sports and was a devoted fan of her beloved Kansas Jayhawks.

She was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church.

Darlene was preceded in death by her loving husband, Louis, on September 27, 2009. She also was preceded by her son, Rick Young, a granddaughter, Monica Wilkinson, and her three brothers, Lloyd, Bill and Stanley Stone.

She is survived by her daughter, Vicky Wilkinson, of  Emporia;  a sister, Helen Wagner and husband Kenneth of El Dorado;   two grandchildren, Amber Smith and husband Cameron of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Clay Wilkinson of Gridley;  5 great-grandchildren, Karly Crouch, Lilah Wilkinson, Coy Wilkinson, Kahlen Smith, and Kinley Smith;  and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M., on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington, with burial following at Gridley Cemetery.   The family will meet with friends for visitation on Wednesday evening from 7:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.   Memorial contributions to “Darlene Young Memorial Fund” may be sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, PO Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.

Charles Andrew Huff, 90, Burlington, died May 10, 2012, at Coffey County Hospital, in Burlington, Kansas.  

He was born to Harry A. and Helen E. Wilcox Huff, on November 29, 1921, at Burlington.  Charles spent most of his growing up years in Burlington, and graduated from Burlington High School in 1939.  He served during World War II in the Army Air Corp, stationed in England, where he was a co-pilot.  He flew bombing missions in B-17 Bombers over Germany.

He married Ruth Garrett on August 15, 1947.  They had six children.

He graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1951, with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Relations.  He went on to become a Scout Executive with the Boy Scouts of America.  Even after retiring in 1984, he worked tirelessly as a Scouting volunteer, earning the Silver Beaver Award.

In 1960, he and his mother and brother Ralph developed a retail-wholesale greenhouse business called Huff’s Gardens in Burlington. The business now belongs to his son.

Charles served as an elder and Sunday school teacher in the Christian Church, and was instrumental in the construction of the present building.  He served in that capacity in every church in communities where he and his family lived.

Charles belonged to many community and civic organizations, including the Burlington Rotary Club, the Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge, the Gideon’s International, Burlington school board, Coffey County Council on Aging, Coffey County Transportation, American Legion, National Chrysanthemum Association and many others.

Charles received many honors, awards, and special recognition over the years, including having a variety of mum named after him.  His life was one of love of family, service to his country and community, but most importantly serving Jesus and his church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Susan Hawley, an infant son, Charles Samuel Huff, two brothers, Ralph and Roy Huff, and a sister, Grace Chandler.

Charles is survived by his wife Ruth, of the home;  a son, Harry E. Huff and his wife Debbie, of Burlington;  three daughters, Helen Steele and her husband Tom, of Sutherland, Iowa,  LouAnn Huskisson and her husband Dan, of Peoria, Arizona, and Cathy Salava and her husband Larry, of Columbus, Nebraska;  a brother, Glenn Huff and his wife Jeannie, of Washington State; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Huff of Burlington;  fifteen grandchildren,  twenty-four great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at the Burlington Christian Church, with burial following at Bailey Cemetery.  The family will receive friends for visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M..   Memorial contributions ‘Gideons International’, ‘Burlington Christian Church’, or ‘Boy Scout Troop #139’  may be sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, P.O.
