Dr. Hensley holds four university degrees in communications, including a Ph.D. in literature and linguistics from Ball State University, where he was named "Distinguished Doctoral Graduate in English." He is director of the professional writing major at Taylor University Fort Wayne, where he is a professor of English.

During the 2001-2 academic year he served as "Distinguished Visiting Professor of English and Journalism" at Regent University, where he was honored as "Professor of the Year." Currently, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Jerry B. Jenkins' Christian Writers Guild, he is in his 16th year as a member of the planning committee of the Midwest Writers Workshop, and he sits on the Journalism Advisory Board of Ball State University.

Dr. Hensley has been married to his wife Rose for 34 years. They have a son, Nathan, 28, and a daughter, Jeanette, 25. Dr. Hensley served as a sergeant in the United States Army during 1970 and 1971, including 12 months of combat duty in Viet Nam, where he was awarded six medals and five letters of commendation.
