Linux OS

What is Linux?

Linux is a free, open source, Unix like Operating System that is better all round than the 'other guys' OS. Linux runs on all kinds of hardware, from Intel x486 and up to Macintosh, Amiga, NeXT, Sun, SGI, HP, etc.

Applications cover nearly everything one would want to do with a computer. The only thing I was unable to find for Linux was a driver for my scanner, but its a proprietary thing so its to be expected.

Where to get Linux?

Well, these days you can get Linux from just about any book or computer shop. I do recommend getting a good text reference such as Matt Welchs' "Running Linux" from O'Reilly books. Especially with Slackware. You can download slackware from their ftp site, its easy with Slackware. Another cheap way to get Linux is through a place called CheapBytes, www.cheapbytes.com. You can get a CDROM for as little as $1.49. The postage is more than that!
