Next, I toned the fixed charcoal drawing with acrylic washes of phthalo blue and phthalo violet in a medium value. I used thin washes of these high staining, transparent colors to retain the tooth of the sanded painting surface and to avoid covering up my drawing. An alternative approach: an underpainting of medium value with washes of local colors rather than monochromatic. Other compatible water based media or even oil washes can also be used.
