Text Box: Way back in the dark ages, after I was transferred from the Postal Police to the position of Security Technician for the Postal Inspection Service, one of my duties was to examine seized computers, and be on the team when search warrants were executed. My job was to look for financial records or other incriminating records.
I belonged to an organization called F.A.C.T. Forensic and Computer Technologists. We were a group of assorted technicians and criminalists from various organizations. We met to keep up with new investigative techniques to use on computer searches.
This was back in the Day of “DOS”, or Text Box: Disk Operating Systems that were the predecessors of Windows.
Later, around 1984, computers were an essential part of white collar crime and the F.B.I. started the Magnetic Media Program, which became the Computer Analysis and Response Team (CART). In 1995, the International Organization on Computer Evidence was formed (IOCE). The G8 countries declared in 1997, that, “Law enforcement personnel must be trained and equipped to address high-tech crimes” in the Moscow communiqué of December.
In 1999, F.B.I. CART case load passed 2,000 cases, consisting of 17 terabytes of information.
Text Box: Finally, in 2000, the first F.B.I. Regional Computer Forensics laboratory was established.
Today, almost every law enforcement department has their own Computer Forensics Technologist. It is a growing and fascinating career choice.
