Text Box: Recently there was a scare in Las Vegas when several vials of Ricin poison were found in a motel room.  Things are under control now, but most people don’t know what ricin is.
Ricin is made from the waste of castor bean mash.  Castor beans are used to make castor oil.  The poison has to be deliberately made.  Text Box: Accidentally producing ricin from castor beans is highly unlikely.  The poison is generally in the form of a powder, a liquid mist, or a pellet.
Depending on the route of exposure (such as injection or inhalation), as little as 500 micrograms of ricin could be enough to kill an adult. A 500-microgram dose of ricin Text Box: would be about the size of the head of a pin.
There is no antidote for ricin poisoning
