mistaken

(with apologies to R.F.Laird)

I once believed myself an intelligent man,
But I must have been mistaken,
Because I just can't comprehend why
I absolutely must be held responsible,
For some reason,
Since the day that I was born,
And even earlier than that,
For all of the things that are wrong with my country,
And that went wrong in my country's past,

Like the methodical extermination of indian tribes during previous centuries,
And the slave trade that went on for about a million years,
And parents who have forgotten how to love and raise their children,
And teach them that personal responsibility is the only thing
That will keep our society from crumbling further into anarchy,
And the fact that life really isn't fair,
And that we aren't all really born equal,
No matter what scientists, and philosophers, and sociology professors say,
And the total injustice which springs from an eternal truth:
That the most successful people are usually the ones who work the hardest,
Or the ones who take the biggest risks.
