so many people have asked about my name.
"wait a second," a person will say.  "i am confused.  what is your name?"

when i create, i usually sign my work as d jon downs or d jon d (visual arts are different, as specified below).
on sketches, paintings, or other visual art pieces, i often use the mark <<djd>> or sometimes you will see <<twig>>.
on academic or career work, i often sign david j. downs or david john downs, which read as more prestigious, somehow.
the most important people in my life call me j., so i've started using that myself in most informal situations.

other names to which i will or have responded in the past:  daddy-o, mr. downs, captain, twiggy, fooman, big d.
i think some people call me satan, but i don't answer to that one.  not often, anyway.
