Notes

The Laughlin family originated in the highlands of Scotland. They were
Protestant, and during the religious persecutions of Mary Queen of Scots,
1550-1555 they were forced to flee from Scotland in small boats at night
to Ireland. They settled in the county of Antrum. John Laughlin, immigrant
ancestor, was born at Dervock, Conty of Antrum, Ireland, and emigrated
to America when a young man. The probable date of his arrival is between
1740 and 1750. He landed at Philadelphea and married Mary White there.
He settled at Big Spring, Cumberland Co., Penn. and lived there until 1771
when he moved to Pendleton District, South Carolina, where he died in
1773 or 1774. He had seven children.

This conflicts with what the Freeport Laughlins indicate. They say his father
came to America about 1731.
