Notes

Left South Carolina in 1807. Came to Brown County, Ohio with two other
families becaus of slavery in South Carolina, the Rev. James Gillilands
(Presbyterian) and Willis Warnocks. Moved in 1820 To Bond County, Ill.
Owned 100 acres in Bond Co. Also bought 400 acres in Putnam Co., but did
not move there (near Florid) until 1830/ He was a leading member of the
Union Grove Presby. Church, which was also used as a school house. He
was a strong abolitionist and brought with him an escaped slave named
George. Samuel's home was a well known station on the underground rail-
road.
