I am going back to the basics using Meet the Gimp tutorials to fill in
areas that I either missed before or I am fuzzy on now. These are
excellent tutorials and I hope all of you can view the MP4 videos which
is usually viewed with Quicktime.
I
see now that the Google search box only searches the "snapshot" of the
page back in August. I will have to see how to update that. I am
considering converting the menu page to a pdf file which can easily be
searched.
September 27, 2009
Our
tutorial menu has gotten big so I installed a Google search box that
will search the menu page. If all you did was enter a term like
"toolbox" the search engine will just show you the page as a result but
if you click on "cached" at the bottom of the search results it will
show the page with all of the occurrences of "toolbox" highlighted.

I
have rearranged our menu so that all of the brush links including the
three provided by Rich in the Feedback post are under the header:
"Brushes, make your own or importing" If you run across other good
links about this subject then let me know.

Photo
retouching in the form of restorations and enhancements is the latest
projects in The Gimp Group. You will find links to both the restoration
projects and the photo enhancement tutorial in the "Miscellaneous"
category of our menu. I am hoping more members will contribute to the
"Gimp Works" post, I know members are using Gimp in everyday (nothing
fancy) projects and would like to see samples of their work posted here.

Yes, we all know
that Gimp
works but we are looking for your everyday works, your daily Gimp tasks
and projects that you use elsewhere. These are not the "wow!" Gimp
projects but the things we do often with Gimp to enhance our online
experience. A link to this post will be in our menu.

Exploring Gimp's Menu Bar
We will step away from the
Layers~ Hands-on learning for awhile but will continue as we find
intersting and informative
projects that will improve our abilties using Gimp's layers.
We
are now going to check out some of those menu items that have not been
mentioned and will start with the very interesting File/Create menu.

Simple Defintions
I
have started a series of simple definitions posts that I will
make
as I find these "plain English" definitions in my GIMP journeys. They
will be listed alphabetically in our menu. If you come across one you
would like to see listed then PMail me with the information.

New Series: Layers
~ Hands-on Learning
For those of you
who have been following along with the Layers tutorial
this will be a break from the book learning to hands-on learning. We
will choose tutorials that will affirm the basics we have already
learned and present practical applications of the use of layers in
Gimp. It is time we start having some fun!

Gimp Documentation back on line!
After over three long days
they finally corrected the document site for Gimp. Now I am wondering
if I should download the entire document file just in case. Anyway I am
now get back to learning this fascinating program.

Gimp
Documentation Site Crash!
I am not able to link to the
Gimp 2.6 documentation sites now for three days so that has put a halt
to the tutorials. I can get around this a little for new tutorials but
the old ones are hot- linked to the Gimp site and some of the
information
in the tutorials will be missing. I hope this is a temporary problem.

Layers
- (Semi-Advance)
We
have completed the layers-basics tutorial for now, if I find more
information that would be useful to the beginner then I will post
it, my goal is to try not to scare away the new user in that tutorial.
Next step is to classify the rest of us as semi-advanced users and
provide a layers tutorials for those of us who are beginning to feel
more confident in using Gimp's layers.

Layers
When
I first thought about doing the tutorial posts I debated as to whether
to do the layers first or the tools. I think either way would have
worked out. I have learned a lot about layers while researching the
tools. We are now going to get into "layers" and learn as
much as
we can. I am still not sure if my layers should be transparent, white,
black, with or without an alpha channel etc. I hope this all
will
be cleared for me as we begain the Layers
Tutorial Series.
Toolbox Items
We
are down to the last two items in my toolbox (toolbox items will be
different for some because you can add/remove tools from the box).
After the toolbox items it will be an extensive review of layers, layer
masks etc. In the mean time if you see a tutorial that will enhance the
toolbox item information please post it in the appropriate post. If it
is a video and the use of the tool is limited to only a short portion
of the video then try to include the "minute-marker" of the video where
the information starts.

Moving
right along.....
We
are moving right along in the basic tools tutorials. I am learning a
lot as we go and wish we could learn even more about each tool. Good
information surprisingly is not easy to find, video authors
tend
to skip over the little things like the use of tools and go right into
the big stuff. As I am researching for the tools tutorials I
am
also learning from a series of more advance video tutorials from a
couple of German authors. Sometimes I will pick up on tool tips while
watching these masters at work and I will update the previous basic
tutorials as I learn them. I would like to see more sample work here on
the front pages, don't be shy!

ToolTips
As
I am exploring more and more tutorials for reseach for our group I have
found a few useful tool tips, hints, shortcuts etc. I am not very good
at remembering hotkeys or shortcuts. But when I find a tip that is
quite useful I will remember it and offer it here under the post titled
"Tooltip". A link is provided in our menu for this post theme. Anyone
who has a useful tip please PMail me with the information so
we
can post it.

Feedback
We
are getting a moderate number of daily visitors to the group but very
little activity or feedback. I know my slow step by step tutorials on
the basics probably bore some of the more advance GIMP users but we are
open minded about someone leading a more advance tutorial or discussion
as I creep along in my basics learning. How about some feedback on
anything you want to discuss? You can reply to this post or open up a
new one.

Staying
Focused - Back to the basics
There
is so much fun stuff to do in Gimp and the more I explore for tutorials
and help pages the easier it is to get sidetracked! I try to "play"
each day in Gimp but I also try to stay focused on learning the basics.
So after a few vacations days away from the basics I am back to learn
more Gimp stuff!

The
Gimp Group Conference Room
We
have set up a chat room for those of you who wish to discuss a problem
or share information by using live chat. One way of doing this is to
set up a time to meet in the chat room through a post, PMail etc. The
link to the chat room and to the help pages is located at the top of
our menu.

Alignment
Tool...grrrrr
I
started the tutorial on the Alignment Tool to day and was frustrated
with the lack of good tutorials to share here. I believe I am going to
have to join some forums and ask questions about this tool, until then
that tutorial remains incomplete.

Where
is my Layers Box?!
We
have had some members trying to find their Layers box, Tool Options box
etc. Unfortunately the video called "Basics - Part 1- New users start
here" in the new users section of our menu has some incorrect
information for users with the latest version of Gimp. If you view that
video at minute marker 2:10 the instructor shows you how to find your
dialog boxes but the method is for an older version of Gimp.
For that reason I posted a correction in the post titled "Dockable
Dialogs". That post will be available as a link in the "New Users" area
of our menu and a correction note has been added to the
video dialog. We will keep the "Dockable Dialogs" post as a
sticky
post for a few days.

Glitch
in Videos
Thanks
to Laurie2 for pointing out that the YouTube videos were not working in
the tutorials. I am using a new web page publisher and some times it
wants to mess with the links, grrrrr.... If I don't figure out why I
will be going back to the old publisher. Today I will be
starting
the tutorial on the Scissor Select Tool, got a late start due to
maintaining the web page video problem so I don't know if I will finish
the tutorial today. I also want to try out the Adding New Brushes that Renee43 gave us a
heads-up on. The links to that is in the menu.

Thanks
to Rich64nv
Rich sent me a link to a
official Gimp page that has a list of their tutorials, from beginner to
expert etc. I have included the link here in our menu. There are
hundred of good tutorial sites out there for Gimp. My aim is to
incorporate them into our learning here. I emphasize again that I am
taking the long tedious path of learning by first semi-mastering all of
the tools in the toolbox. I have been playing with Gimp for over a year
and now is the time for me to get serious about learning it. I
encourage everyone to jump around and have fun with Gimp but also spend
a little time each day learning the techniques. Also please advise me
of any good tutorial pages out there that we can use. Thanks again, ~gJ

Quick
Note
As you can see I am learning and sharing knowledge about each item in
the toolbox, started with the Rectangle Select tool today. I taught
electronics in the Air Force and this is the only way I know how to
teach - methodical, logically and slow! ;-)
I am doing this for the beginners and so that I can fill in the cracks
of my Gimp knowledge base. I learned a lot today just on the simple
select tool. I encourage everyone here to start where you want to
start, become a teacher as you learn something, share you knowledge and
some of your results! Feb 11, 2009
