HAND< COLE

Arthelia Hand Cole born 1829 Cape May Co. died 1920, not sure where. She married John S Cole Sr in 1851. He died in 1872. Their son Eugene was a school teacher. In 1880 Arthelia was living with her son Eugene, and her youngest son John S. Jr. aged 15 was also living with them. Arthelia made a quilt in 1907 that reposes in the St Petersburg, Florida History Museum. They have no information on her, where she was from or any of the names on the quilt. Each block has a name written on it with what looks like gold ink. Se's related to nearly all the people whose names are on the quilt. They are all descendants of the Cape May, New Jersey original settlers. I wish to find someone related to Arthelia Hand and John Cole, who can fill me in on what the quilt represents. The museum received it from an antique store who also knew nothing of it's origin or even who sold it to them. It may have been from an estate, but I haven't found that yet. The quilt may represent a school's pupils and parents, since many people on the quilt were born around 1880, or even a church group or a church school. Then maybe it represents a reunion group. It is not Arthelia's family tree as her parents and grandparents are not listed on the quilt. I will donate my work to the museum so they have some information on the woman who made the quilt, but it would be much nicer to be able to document what the quilt represents. Anything you can tell me, or if you can put me in touch with her descendants will be most appreciated. I always give credit to those who work is incorporated with my work. Thank you very much in advance. 6 JULY 2005, Ethel Beard Simons, Bboopbeard@aol.com
