Friends ‘n’ Neighbors Day

Pictured above is our “Inter-Urban Depot”. In 1899, the Des Moines & Central Iowa Railway was incorporated as the Inter-Urban Railway. The Beaver Valley Division began serving Woodward in 1906. Standing at it’s original location, the depot has served the City well as the shelter house in McColls park since 1951.

Pictured below is the ”Inter-Urban Depot” as it looks today. After several citizens took it upon themselves to give it a face lift.

The Committee is planning to closing Highway 210 (Main St.) again this year. Look at the “Highway Detour” link for details.

Welcome to the Woodward Iowa Friends ‘n’ Neighbors Day home page. This annual event could not happen without the help of our friends, neighbors, local businesses and neighboring businesses.

Woodward businesses and “Neighboring Businesses” play a big part in the creation of this event. Both have a page on this website. Please look at those pages and support the businesses listed there. (They are our friends and neighbors.)

Server space is limited and expensive. Only the businesses that participate or donate will have their logos listed.

Events and schedules listed here and on any flyers are subject to change and availability.

According to the Northeast Dallas County Record, Woodward’s annual celebration that is now called Friends ‘n’ Neighbors Day began September of 1972 as “Jaycees Crazy Day.” There was a parade, and businesses had sidewalk sales. That continued yearly until the Centennial celebration in June of 1983 chaired by Russell Boyles. That year thousands enjoyed a street dance, parade, coin auction, pie contest and auction, plowing match, history book, Centennial Ball at Lake Robbins Ballroom, pageant, quilt show, plus other activities and contests. Bill and Virgina Siglin were crowned King and Queen. Dr. Royer Appreciation Day was held in Aug of 1984. There was a parade, Sportsman’s Club beef supper, and Las Vegas night. Friends and Neighbors Day officially began Aug. of 1985. For more history click on the “History” button to the left near the top of the page.
