Slaid Cleaves was the first act we saw at the 2002 Newport Folk Festival and it was a great one. Mr. Cleaves is an excellent songwriter and singer and his band was also full of energy and life. Especially fun was when his bass player climbed up on and balanced on his stand-up bass while simultaneously continuing to play. We bought his CD "Broke Down" and it is excellent. It is (as the title implies) not the happiest CD ever recorded but if you like hard luck country music (and we do) this is an album you will find yourself playing a lot.
