We got our first opportunity to see Lucy Kaplansky perform live when we attended the 2002 Falcon Ridge Festival.  We originally got tickets because we are big Greg Brown fans, but we found a lot of great music there, including Lucy Kaplansky's.  Ms. Kaplasky was in several of the same "workshops" and other presentations as Mr. Brown and her music caught our attention.  Her solo set was nice and we especially liked her song "Ten Year Night" so we bought the album with that track on it, which turned out to be called "Ten Year Night".  It is a strong folk/rock/pop album and Kaplansky is an intelligent songwriter and a fine interpreter of the songs of others.

We also got to see Kaplansky perform at the 2003 Iowa City Arts Festival.  Her set there was maybe even more impressive than at Falcon Ridge and she sang several songs she said she would be recording soon.  It sounds like another good collection!  We got to say "hi" and have her sign a copy of "Ten Year Night" for us after the show and she seemed very nice and friendly.

We can recommend her newest album "Every Single Day" as well as the others we are familiar with: "Flesh and Bone" and, of course, "Ten Year Night."  Her other two albums ("The Tide" and "Cry, Cry, Cry" with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell) we have not heard yet, but we are betting they are good too.  During her excellent main set at Falcoln Ridge Ms. Kaplansky also performed Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" and noted it was on the "Nod To Bob" album.  We bought that album as well, and it is probably the best Dylan tribute album we have ever heard.  Along with Kaplansky's contribution it also features Greg Brown, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Norman Blake and Peter Ostroushko, and many more.  Finally, Ms. Kaplansky contributes a song to the "Fast Folk" album which we also recommend.  Click on the above picture of Kaplansky taken by Wade at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and you will be taken to her official website.
