Individual Note: William 1,the Conqueror, reigned 1066-1087)- Duke of Normandy (1035-1087). Invaded England, defeated and killed his rival Harold at the Battle of Hastings and became King. the Norman conquest of England was completed by 1072 , aided by the establishment of feaudalism under which his followers were granted land in return for pledges of service and loyalty. as King William was noted for his efficent if harsh rule. His Adminstration relied upon Norman and other foreign personnell, especially Lanfranc Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1085 started "Doomsday book.
William, was known to his contempories as" William The Bastard'. His mother Herleva gave birth to Robert, Duke of Normandy's only son. Since William was illegitimate it was necessary for the Duke to persuade the barons of Normandy to recoginize Williams's birthright, because he was about to keave on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.On the way home from the trip to Jerusalem Robert was killed and William at the age of 7 became the Duke of Normandy. because of his age he ascention to the throne went unruled for 10 years.

In the face of Danish raids,he was forced to pay huge tributes(Danegeld) to the enemy. He was driven into exile by Sweyn but returned after his death.
He died duringCanutes invasion of England.
Burke sayes he died 1010. His tomb was lost when the old St. Pauls was destroyed in the great fire of London

Individual Note: Reigned 959-975, The first King of a United England. He allowed his Danish subjects to retain Danish laws. Edgar promoted a monastic revival and encouraged trade by reforming the currency. He improved defence by orgianising coastal naval patrols and a system for manning warships. Although he succeeded on 1st. October 959, he was not crowned until 973 because St. Dunstan, the Archbishop of Canterbury, disapproved of his way of life
