NOTES for JOHN WILLIAM JUNKINS:
Born in Londonderry,Ireland. As a young man (appox.1795) John left Ireland as a stowaway on a merchant sailing ship. He was discovered too far out to sea to be sent back.He was too young to be punished, however he was required to work as a seaman for passage. He landed in America at Baltimore, Maryland.

In the early 1800's he settled in western Maryland near Oakland, which was a frontier area with few settlers. Oakland was not surveyed and laid out until 1849. John probably supported his family through hunting, fishing, and farming.

John and his second wife Elizabeth were listed in the 1853 membership records of the Oakland Methodist Church (Established 1849).

He married twice to Ruth Fizwater (about 1782-1818) and to Elizabeth Anderson.

This information was found in the "Genealogy of the Harvey of Garrett County"-by Marshell G.Brown (Copy in the Ruth Enlow Library in Oakland ,Md.)."The Glade Star",article "Early Methodists in Oakland,Md." (Volume 5,Number 29,Page 591). Young John Junkins adventure as a ship 'stowaway' is confirmed by two independent sources;1) recorded in "Genealogy of the Harvey Family of Garrett County"; and 2) passed down through the Junkins family via Cathleen(Junkins) Christner.
