Portland Mills Bridge 1856                                                            WGN 14-61-21        Map Quest Location

CR 720 E., CR 650N. east of Marshall

This bridge built by Henry Wolfe, has an interesting history.

The bridge was originally located where Raccoon Lake now is.

Just at the time the Portland Mills bridge was near destruction, the

Dooley Station bridge #3 was burned. The Portland Mills bridge was

moved here in 1961, to take the place of the burned bridge. For years this

bridge was allowed to deteriorate until it had collapsed and fallen into

the creek. Funds from a grant and local organizations and donations

allowed it to be restored to its original state in 1996.

This is a Burr Arch construction bridge, 130 feet long, 1 span, it crosses the

Little Raccoon Creek

And is on the National Register of Historical Places. 1978
