Notes:

There was some confusion over my great grandfather's middle name. A photocopy of a page from the Evans family bible has his middle name as "Webster," but several members of the family say his middle name was "Washington." Cecile Evans sent me an e-mail 12 November 2006 in which she said she had see Daniel's application for a Civil War pension, which had been completed by Martha. Martha stated that Daniel's middle name was Washington. (I now have a photocopy of Daniel's pension application and Martha's widow's application.) The official records I've seen give his name as either Daniel W. Evans or D.W. Evans. He also went by the nickname of "Tobe."

Most of the information about D.W. Evans comes from my aunts and uncles. D.W.'s mother died when he was a child. D.W.'s death certificate says his mother's name was Mary Rountree. I found D.W. Evans, age 13, listed in the 1860 census for Shelby County, Alabama. The head of the household was T.J. Evans, age 35. Johannah, age 26, was listed below T.J. as a housewife.  D.W. is quoted as saying that no child could have loved his stepmother more than he did his.

Family lore says D.W. ran away and joined the Confederate army at 15. I found record of a D.W. Evans, age 15, enlisting being assigned to Company K of the 31st Alabama (Infantry) Regiment. He apparently mustered in at Camp Goldthwaite on 7 May 1862. I have also found where D.W. jointed the Robert E. Lee Camp, #158, of the Confederate Veterans in Fort Worth, Texas, in March 1907. He is listed as enlisting in 1862 and being captured in 1864 in Georgia. He was pardoned from "Natchex, Miss." in June 1865.

The Alabama Department of Archives and History has an online “Alabama Civil War Service Database.”  The database has two entries for D.W. Evans. It appears to me that the information is for the same individual. Under "Birth Information" it states, "USA, Souh [sic] Carolina, Edgefield County." Under "Enlistment Information": "Age 15, Alabama, Wilsonville, Private." And, under "Remarks": "Sandy hair, blue eyes, height 5ft 5in, dark complexion."

D.W. lost a big toe. Some family members say they remember that his toe was "shot off in the war." My father remembers hearing that he accidentally chopped it off.

D.W. was a blacksmith by trade, left-handed, and very strong.

Regrettably, I have no information about Martha Moore Evans.
