Notes: Clayton first appears in the 1870 census for Montgomery County, Virginia in the household of Samuel and Lucinda Bishop. He is listed as being 2 years of age. With him are Mary E. (age 12), Sarah J. (9), Samuel W. (7), Charles W. (4), and Silas (2 months).

The 1880 census for Montgomery County has Clayton (12) in Samuel's household. Lucinda is not listed.  Others included are: Sarah J. (18), Samuel W. (16), Charles W. (15), John (10), Ernest (8), and Tazwell (4).
