Fielder on the way to the showers. Vietnam 1967.

This is Fielder. He was in the company when I arrived and he was there when I left.

I remember going on trash hauling detail with him once. That wasn't a bad detail. It usually only took half a day. We rode in a 5-ton dump around the company area picking up the 55-gallon drums that served as trash cans and dumping them into the bed. Once we had all the trash, it was off to the dump, where the truck did the rest of the work.

I remember the driver had been in country much longer than either of us, and according to him, we were supposed to stop at a little stand operated by a couple of locals and drink Cokes. Somehow, I don't think the powers back at the company would think that was an okay thing to do.

Four GIs. L to R: Caswell, unnamed, unnamed, Sluter. Vietnam 1967.

If I remember correctly, the guy on the left, standing, is Sp4 Caswell and the guy on the right, standing, is Sluter. I don't remember the others' names, but I think the guy sitting on the 3/4-ton was the junior welder. He worked for Sp5 Esteves.

When I first arrived, I was Caswell's bunk mate in the tent. Directly across from me was a guy named George Black. There's a photo of him below, but you can't recognize him because it's of his back. Nice guy, though.

Jess Chamberlain and friend. Vietnam 1967.

Here's a photo I took ofJess L. Chamberlain and friend sharing a quite moment somewhere in downtown Bien Hoa.

In return, Jess took a picture of me with a local girl on my lap (below). I sent a copy to Larry Laird, a friend back home. He happened to live next door to my family. Well, Larry showed the picture to his mom, and Mrs. Laird walked it over to my mom and said, "I saw the photo of you new daughter-in-law."
