My
Vietnam Experience

When I arrived, the EM club was a relatively small affair. It was located in portion of a tropical barracks-styled building down toward (I guess it was) the battalion HQ area. I think the cliental must have been limited to members of our battalion. The barber shop and the PX were down that way, too. (Remember, cigarettes were 11 cents a pack or $1.10 a carton?) Later, a larger combined EM/NCO club was built toward the northeast. I think we had to cross through A company's area and cross a road. (There was an outdoor movie theater over that way, too.) The EM portion was separated from the NCO portion by the centrally located bar. As lowly pukes (E4 and below), we were allowed to buy only beer. The more mature NCOs were allowed to buy beer and hard booze. I never enjoyed the atmosphere of the big club (but I still went there every chance I got). From time to time, small troupes of entertainers would visit the club. |
