The Iowa Brevet Series is an ACP validated Super Randonneur series of 200, 300, 400km and 600km rides. The routes are nested, and head NE from Waterloo. All routes are out-and-back, except for the 600km, which forms a “lollipop”. The 300km route is revised this year, and will turn around in McGregor, IA. Control points are as follows (click on each link to see the route map and profile):

200km (Map)(Profile): Oelwein, Volga, Oelwein, Dunkerton, Finish

300km (Map)(Profile): Oelwein, Elkader, McGregor, Volga, Oelwein, Dunkerton, Finish

400km (Map)(Profile): Oelwein, Monona, De Soto (WI), Monona, Oelwein, Finish

600km (Map)(Profile): Oelwein, Monona, De Soto (WI), Wilton (WI), Richland Center (WI), Prairie du Chien (WI), Oelwein, Finish.

The control in Monona includes a Subway sandwich bar. There is another Subway on the 600km route in Viroqua (WI), between De Soto and Wilton. A bag drop on the 600km will transport riders’ gear to the Super 8 in Richland Center (see below). Controls in Richland Center (600km), Prairie du Chien (600km) and Oelwein (400km and 600km) are all open 24 hours.

Lodging: All the Iowa Brevet Series rides will start and finish at the Heartland Inn, 1809 Laporte Rd., Waterloo. For those traveling from out of town, you are recommended to stay at the Heartland Inn, tel. (800) 334-3277 or (319) 235-4461. A group block of rooms has been reserved for the Friday night preceding each ride, also the Saturday night for the 400km. These will be held until four weeks before each event. The Heartland Inn is a 100% smoke free facility. Please make your own individual reservation with the Heartland Inn. We were given a preferential group room rate for 2008 of $73.99+tax, so be sure to identify yourself as being with the Cedar Valley Cyclists bike event. Directions to this motel are given on our Directions page. There is a 24-hour IHOP restaurant close to the motel, and several other restaurants and a 24-hour HyVee grocery store nearby in the Crossroads Mall area. Heartland Inn provides breakfast starting at 6am on Saturdays. I requested an early breakfast before the 400km and 600km, but I make no guarantees…..

600km: For riders on the 600km who plan to take a nighttime rest stop, this will be at the Super 8 motel in Richland Center, WI, tel. (608) 647-8988. A group block of non-smoking rooms has been booked there for Saturday night, July 12. These will be held until June 12. Rates are $65+tax for 1 person, and $70+tax for 2 people. Please make your own individual reservation, identifying yourself as being with the Cedar Valley Cyclists bike event. Richland Center is reached after 230 miles of riding.

IMPORTANT: Brevets are long, tiring rides. There have been a few recorded instances of randonneurs drifting off at the wheel with expensive and painful consequences when returning home from a long brevet. Don’t let this happen to you – stay an extra night!

Flèche-USA

On the weekend of May 1-4, we are holding a Flèche-USA team event. Entrants need to form teams of 3-5 machines (a tandem counts as a single machine), and lay out a route of at least 360km, to be covered in the 24-hour period allotted for this event. Pre-registration is required for this event. The deadline for registration is April 20, 2008. Entries will only be accepted from correctly assembled teams, and all communication must come from the team captain. Teams are expected to be fully conversant with rules governing this event, a copy of which is available at http://www.rusa.org/flecherules.html. Per the rules, the permitted start time for each team is between 12:00 Thursday and 10:00 Saturday. However, teams are recommended to start around 08:00 Saturday, to meet up for a celebratory gathering at the finish.

The event will finish at the home address of the organizer. Teams finishing at a reasonable hour of the day will be given a hot breakfast, and an opportunity to freshen up.

Summer 100km Populaire

This Populaire on June 7 will start in the parking lot of Birdsall Park, W. 12th St., Cedar Falls. It will be a loop heading West to Wellsburg and back. The course is very gently rolling and should appeal to any recreational cyclist. A RUSA Populaire lapel pin will be issued to each successful finisher. Controls are as follows (click on each link to see the route map and profile):

(Map)(Profile): Wellsburg, Dike, Finish.

Randonneurs USA 10th Anniversary Brevet

On August 16th, a 206km RUSA sanctioned brevet will be held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of Randonneurs USA. RUSA members who successfully complete the ride will be able to purchase a special RUSA 10th anniversary medal to mark the occasion. This event starts in the parking lot of Birdsall Park, W. 12th St., Cedar Falls. The route is an out-and-back, turning around in Sheffield, IA. Controls are as follows:

206km (Map)(Profile): Greene, Sheffield, Greene, Shell Rock, Finish.

The course is gently rolling, and should be well within the capabilities of most century riders.

Join us for our late Summer Brevet to finish your season with a bang!
