Sonia is a fiercely loyal, independent woman whose main goal is to protect her family. Her children sometimes view her as overprotective. She is a single mother, forced to raise her children alone after her husband died when the kids were very young. Money was always tight, and Sonia spent time on welfare trying to make ends meet. Sonia had sometimes faced prejudice and stigma for being a Latina woman and a single mother who was once on welfare. She has worked her way up, starting with waiting tables to make ends meet, and she is now the manager of the nicest restaurant in town. She is proud that all of her children have become successful, but still worries about them. Her daughter Pilar was always a handful, and Sonia has had more than her share of conflict with her. She doesn’t approve of all of Pilar’s choices, and continues to worry that Pilar will get in more trouble. She fears that Esteban will encounter danger in his job as a police officer. Sonia has had a hard time letting go and accepting that her children are all adults now, and they sometimes resent what they see as her over involvement in their lives. Sonia is close to her boss, Andrew Wesley, and will do just about anything for him. They share a special closeness and connection because they have both raised their families alone. Sonia senses a certain sadness and pain in Andrew at times, but doesn’t know what causes it. They have recently begun dating casually.
